How do I properly send an email or letter to a label or producer to get them to listen to your songs? – Luke (0:42) I could be wrong, but it seems to me my musical strength resides in that what makes me weak as a human being: my suffering, my “pathos”, which I try to convert in my music. Still, my sister, who happens to be my closest confident, says my lyrics lack a silver lining. She often feels like I’m asking for the listener to “cry with me” instead of learning something from my suffering. So my first question for you is: how to make my songs more joyful, more universal, more “bankable” I guess? – Ghali (3:48) Secondly, I must admit I have trouble keeping a steady rhythm when I play music. Often I find myself, changing the tempo from the first chorus to the second, and never is the tempo similar when I play the song just a couple days apart. That’s pretty bad, isn’t it? How can I fix that? – Ghali (6:24) Finally, I heard you say in one of your videos that every artist should be his own producer, otherwise he would never make it. My final question is: where do I acquire the knowledge of a sound engineer? I’m trying to use cubase but I’m having a hard time even doing the simplest things, let alone adding a drum line. – Ghali (10:24) Do the notes you play have anything to do with an artist tapping into his song writing zone?cause on certain beats I tap in real fast and others i don’t know how to begin writing?? how do I constantly start writing on any instrumental without hesitation? what’s the key to this?? – ??? My biggest challenge is probably finishing songs. Little projects get started, but then it’s like I can never settle on details, and get too picky with it, thus spending too much time on them and giving up after a while. This in turn affects my ability to START projects. Not sure what can be done to help. – Jackson Foster (1:19) I’m currently studying music in High School. I really enjoy writing songs, however I’m not too sure on where to start to actually sound any good. I think my main question is, should I write my lyrics first, the chords or the melody? – Claire (5:25) My main struggle is since i have had Severe depression for 7 years now most of my lyrics are either sad, about depression or about death. My main goal with this is to write uplifting lyrics, to help people in the same or a similar situation to me. – Athena (8:59) My greatest challenge in songwriting currently is balancing my enjoyment for it vs treating it like a job, as I would like to make music for a career. Questions: I’ve been looking into and planning on attending The Academy of Contemporary Music in Oklahoma City. What’s your overall take on music schools? – Sean Gross (0:33) Why do all of the sounds of big name productions sound so big? I understand mixing/panning/effects, but I feel like they’re all getting their sounds from some hidden vault out there that only they have access to. I’m mostly referring to electronic production, whether it be hip hop, EDM, or pop. – Jon Taylor (7:47) I feel like my chorus melodies sound a lot like something I’d rather use in a verse, if that makes any sense. – Kate Nord (10:11) One challenge that I face with my songwriting and that you’ve touched on a bit with your twenty one pilots video, is how do I go from different musical genres/styles while maintaining a sense of continuity, and not having a “grab bag” feel to my songs/albums? – Sean Clements (12:27) As to my biggest challenge in songwriting, it probably is trying to determine wether a song I write sounds like one solid unit or if it sounds patchy and like it’s made up of different parts with little cohesion. – Lena (18:05) What advice would you have for a young person who wants to make a living with their own production studio?
