"I like that I can be kind of a calming force in someone's potentially worst day of their life." Jessie knew she wanted a career in medicine and explored several different avenues before deciding to apply to med school.  We discuss how a talk given at her White Coat Ceremony inspired her to keep a journal during her first two years of school, and how an Emergency Medicine doctor is like a "jack of all trades."  She shares her story of deciding to join the United States Air Force just a week before starting her third year rotations, and finally, we talk about how it feels to know where she has matched for residency months ahead of her classmates with the Military Match.

"My mentor early on, the Italian doctor, he showed me how to be truly a compassionate physician. I remember he used to spend so much time with the patients talking to them, not only about their disease, but just getting to know them." Ludovica grew up in Italy until the time she was 12 years old. She recalls her uncle, a traveling doctor who would go to small villages to visit patients in their homes. She says that it was his influence that began her love of medicine. Today we discuss moving to the U.S. before learning English, the difference between Italian medicine and America medicine, research experiences, the power of mentorship, and finally, preparing to apply to medical school.

"I've spent a lot of time with Physical Therapists and I think that did definitely contribute to my interest in medicine. While it always sucked to be injured, I was always interested in what was going on there and the mechanics." Eoin’s professional career in ballet was at its peak when he found his mind wandering to medicine. Although he was very interested, Eoin thought that he was too old and perhaps not academic enough to chase the dream. It wasn't until he retired from dance and became an EMT that he knew he had to pursue a career in medicine. We discuss the journey from a hands off approach home school education, and a full career in the arts, to beginning medical school with an undergrad in kinesiology.

“Try to put them first and reduce the stressors in their life.” Zach met his wife Tenley, while she had taken a year off to improve her application for medical school. We talk about what it was like to go through the process of transitioning from a regular job life to a medical student life, and how it was important to keep the lines of communication open when frustrations occurred.  He shares the ways that made her a priority to help reduce her stress, and finally, the types of ideas he offered when it came to selecting a path for residency.

"I grew up with humble means. My dad was a meat cutter at Smith's, a lot of my childhood we were living in trailer parks, and we had a couple bankruptcies, so I kind of got here on a winding road." Michael grew up with a very humble background in Cedar City Utah. To pay for his college education, he decided to join the Army National Guard. During his undergrad, Michael fell in love with the sciences and considered going into the heath care industry. It wasn't until he was almost finished with nursing school that he knew he wanted to be a doctor. Today we discuss the winding journey that led to medical school, best practices for interview day, and finally, what it's like to be the first medical student in the family.

Lifelong relationships of helping people to stay heathy is a reward of the profession.  I interviewed Dr. Rick Henriksen, a Family Practitioner and faculty member here at the UUSOM.  We talk about the basis of family medicine, what a colonoscopy is and what medical students at the UUSOM experience during their Family Medicine clerkship during their third year of medical school.

“Regardless of where I’m going, I’m doing ortho and that’s all I care about”Jake always had it in the back of his mind that he wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon and med school only solidified that.  With an above average Step 1 score, but a below average one for the orthopedic surgery field, he knew it would take some work to achieve his dream.  We talk about how he compensated for his Step score and what “snagging” honors mean and why it’s important.  He relays his experience of being asked to sing karaoke at one of his residency interviews and finally, how he responded to opening up his match envelope and seeing that he matched where he felt his worst interview had occurred. #Classof2017 #KansasCity

We discuss the path that led her into Geriatrics, details about the upcoming “silver tsunami” and how she became involved in teaching medical students in the innovative Clinical Method Curriculum (CMC) here at the UUSOM.

Initially, they even teased that they were pursuing a PhD so that they could author sci-fi novels. After having very impactful community experiences, Laurel found their passion at the intersection of science, people, and medicine. We talk about the journey of self-discovery, independently pursing big life goals without traditional family support, transgender advocacy, becoming a mentor and example to rising members of the LGBTQ community, choosing the right MD/PhD program, and finally, what’s it like to receive an acceptance to your top choice.

“I had to ask myself some serious questions. One of them was: If you get to the end of your life and this is what you did, you stayed in real estate, would you feel like you had done enough? The answer for me was no, so I knew I had to make a change.” In the back of her mind, Jessica had always wanted to be a doctor. As a single mother of three, she prioritized taking care of her family by building a successful career in real estate. Jessica remarried, and with the support of her family, the dream of going into medicine became a reality. We discuss the process of making a serious career change, balancing family life with medical school, the benefit of being a non-traditional student with life experience, personal growth as a couple through mutual sacrifice, choosing a specialty, and finally, preparing to apply for residency.

“I spent my time doing things that mattered to me, and in the end, I think that’s really what admissions committees want.  They want to know you when you’re applying; they want to see who you are.”As Elynn prepared to apply for medical school, she didn’t take the typical pre-med route by getting involved in a premed club, but rather did things that were important to her that reflected who she was as a person.  We talk about the three items she found helpful in her application journey, as well as how being involved in athletics not only assisted her goal in becoming a physician, but gave her insight when working with patients.  Finally, we talk about her interest in Family Medicine and how her third year rotations have strengthened that desire, and the benefit of training in a rural area verses a higher patient population location.

“I started studying for the MCAT and kept coming to the fact of why am I doing this?” Will was on the path to medical school, studying for the MCAT and volunteering, when he realized it wasn’t the path he wanted to take. He talks about how this realization came to be and what the shift towards pursuing dentistry instead was like. We discuss the differences in the MCAT and DAT, and finally, the similarities between applying to medical school and dental school.

“There was a sudden moment when I called the band together and said ‘guys, I’m quitting.’ And they said ‘no, you can’t quit! Just do what you can’.” With a passion for music, Dan started playing in local bands during his junior year of high school. At the age of 18 and just a senior, he and his band were signed to a record label and on their way to success. We talk about what that was like for him in the early stages of recording and touring, and how he made the decision to pursue medicine instead. He discusses what he did to prepare himself for applying to medical school and finally, shares whether or not being on stage and performing helped him feel less anxious on the interview trail.

“There was a point where I seriously considered other things, even just six months before applying to medical school. We talk about why he chose to volunteer for something that scared him, the importance of finding your “headroom”, his passion for music and his band #TheMayReunion, and finally, what hammocking is and how it changes his perspective in viewing things around him.
