My Guest: Geoff Anderson Geoff Anderson has owned and operated Sonic Sight, a video production facility in Sydney, Australia, since 1993. He’s worked on productions throughout Australia, New Zealand and Singapore and the US, playing the role of video producer, cameraman, editor, director and scriptwriter. Geoff’s background is in science, majoring in Bio-Chemistry and Pure Mathematics, but when he realized that science was not necessarily his thing, he headed overseas and spent two winters skiing in France. During that time, he was paid to water ski, windsurf, scuba dive, pour beers, drink beers, drive around, grow watermelons and occasionally electrocute himself.   Episode Highlights: [04:04]: The camera we used to carry around had a box that was a recording deck, which would be connected with, like an umbilical cord to the actual camera. So it was a two-person shoot. [06:25]: I think it all comes down to the individual definition of what success is. So for other people, they may want the challenge and the excitement of building a big global business. For me, my priorities were my relationships, my children. I want to actually enjoy the ride. [21:00]: The marketing I do now is, I actually look at a school that I’m interested in, I go on LinkedIn and find out who is the marketing manager there or the consultant, and I ring that person. Doing all the social media marketing and stuff is great, and it is important. But really, when I want to get to a particular client, I pick up the phone and I ring them. [29:43]: YouTube is much better for a search result, [but] Vimeo is a cleaner look for your videos. So it’s good for embedding on your website or sharing it with other people. And you’ve got a bit more control these days with Vimeo than YouTube because YouTube are now making you watch other videos of the end of it, whereas on Vimeo, you can direct people a little bit more what you want them to do with it. [36:19]: A case study is a great video because you can have your customer talking about the experience they had with you. They can take the audience on the journey they’ve gone on, from where they had a problem that you can relate to, the solution was provided by your company, whether that was a product or service that they need. And now their businesses in this situation which they want to get to as well. And then they talk about how they are feeling now as a result, that’s a four-step sort of process I take my clients on when we interview them about case studies. 63: The Struggles Women Face in Business with Chanie Ehrentrau (Part 1)

While still in high school, Carey Rome decided that he wanted to own his own business. Seeing that, his Dad told him to go and speak to his uncle who told him the following: It doesn’t matter if you’re doing really well or you’re doing really poorly. If you have to have someone tell you, your business is at risk.  From there, Carey ended up working at the largest CPA and advisory firm in the world at the time before opening up his own firm in 2005. In this episode, Carey shares the ups and downs of going out on his own, plus his struggle of developing an MVP which ended up being his biggest business success- and biggest headache.   My Guest: Carey Rome Carey Rome is a self-declared recovering CPA who somehow can manage both left and right brain activities. Admittedly, right-brain activities are where he thrives.  Carey is a constant admirer of smart ideas and an avid (or maybe addicted) Podcast and audiobook listener. But that is for a reason. It wasn’t until audible and podcasts that he discovered that he was an auditory learner. For years he struggled with reading comprehension. I’m walking up the steps because I couldn’t find the elevator. And I’m walking up the steps. And I trip and I spill coffee all over the place. [10:46]: Estie: What do you do first? What do you do? Carey: Um, I did what I do not recommend others do. I bought everyone I know that would go, a bottom lunch or coffee.   [16:03]: And now I’ve got a cash flow problem, because I have to have to pay real people, 13 people, starting all at once, traveling every week, which gets expensive. And then I had to float that for 65 or 70 days until I got paid. [29:56]: Yeah, I would say, find a way to document your expertise in a product of some sort. And don’t sell it based on time. Sell it based on the value that you deliver from that product or service. [35:16]: Then one day that client looks up and says, I can’t believe we’re paying Estie this much money! We can hire someone full time for that. And then they say, “Hey Estie, it’s been great. You know what, probably at the end of the next two weeks, we probably need to end this.” [44:33]: I went to larger companies saying. “Surely you do this, well, give me a little guidance on what I’m developing.” And as it turns out, they said, “Actually, we do that very, very poorly. We need that.” So now I’ve got a struggle as it were. I have developed a minimal viable product, and what I need to develop is an enterprise solution. [50:34]: Because the goal is to get up to that peak, and then start another one, and then start another one. I look at it almost like mountain climbing. In this episode, Vova Tess and Estie Rand thrash out the business of drop shipping, the meaning of building a brand and the purpose of loyalty and providing high value to your clients. Is drop shipping a legit and moral way to make money in 2019 or is it not much more than a sophisticated scam? Tune in to find out!   My Guest: Vova Tess Vova is a young 17-year old multi 6 figure e-commerce entrepreneur, social media influencer, and speaker. Vova has created multiple online businesses that ranged from making multi 5 to 6 figures in sales. He gives speeches at his very own high school showing his fellow peers “Look I can do it, so can you!” He has also been featured by many articles including the “New York Journal” and “Buzzfeed”   Episode Highlights: [1:39] – Vova: At 10 years old, I was selling everything in my house on eBay.   [10:00] – Estie: So we’ve got a great business model here. We create a Shopify store, we get a VA in Pakistan, we pay 10 bucks a day, we link the two stores, we pick products on AliExpress. And people look at it like, “Oh, genius”. Except, as you just said, you kept pouring money into Facebook Ads and nothing was happening.   [14:20] – Estie: Can I be super blunt? This goes against everything I believe in business, which is serving the customer and building loyalty. I always believe in building a brand, even if it’s not from a branding perspective, but from a trust perspective. And this feels to me, I’m not trying to be mean, but it just feels so dishonest and sleazy.   [26:15]- Vova: We’ve got to be always on the next trend. Estie: Gotcha. So it sounds like drop shipping mostly capitalizes on a trend. It’s a quick money checkout thing. Vova: Sort of. Estie: Okay, fair enough. So you’re going to test what’s trending and build a store around that. But then how do you know it won’t die in three months? Vova: I don’t. Estie: So how does that become a lasting brand? Vova: They might not. And then I’ll create more and more and more and more.   [30:17]- Vova: Facebook is always updating their algorithm, so you always got to be on the quick. Maybe this worked six months ago, but it doesn’t work now. That is a real thing. People that could have built something six months ago, and they haven’t touched Facebook ads since, they would suck at it now. They can literally call themselves an expert a year ago, but they might completely not even understand the platform anymore and what works. You have to keep up with the strategies.   [36:52]- Vova: Like, during Black Friday, we have, a “Black Friday sale”. If we’re selling something for $40 and let’s say it was 80% off. But instead of lowering the price from $40, we just upped the Compare-Our-Price. During that week, we made $112,000 in sales, in one week. Estie: I believe you. And what I was doing on Black Friday was giving a class to high schoolers on marketing manipulations, explaining to them that on Black Friday, all that happens is that people jack up the prices, and they tell you it’s a discount. So don’t be fooled and wait until February to shop. But no, I mean, we have 737 Jetson and we have shipping containers, all that stuff. So it all gets shipped in, which is why Alaska is cost of living so high.5:54: So the following year after my Redshirt year, I made the team and I ended up getting bilateral spondylolysis which is two stress fractures on one vertebrae. So I went from being able to bench press reps at 220 or 210, to not being able to lift the bar. It got so bad where I couldn't walk from my car door to my front door, and at that point, I realized that I had to figure something out, or I probably would become crippled.10:35: So that night I went home and I wrote a five page business plan. I brought it back to him the next day knowing that he'd be there. And I said "Here, take a look at this." He brought it home to his wife and a couple days later, I had a check for $50,000 and another three weeks after that I had another check for $50,000.30:01: My mom was sending me positive, uplifting quotes. I was like, "Okay, why isn't this an app?" So last June, I taught myself how to code Swift, which is Apple's native coding language. Mind you, I'd never really coded in my life before, I made a beta app within a month and a half. And then it just kind of started taking on form. So it turned from an app to a network and started attracting content, people and things that resonated with our message. We are trying to build a platform, a Netflix style platform for positive bias content.  38:40: There's a direct correlation between the number of media hours consumed and your probability of being depressed and suicidal.41:09: You and I both met, I'm sure many people who have a lot of money, but they're very financially insecure. Because there's no amount of money that gives you financial security.44:09: The other thing was actually just communicating the fact that this idea will succeed, because people are like "Positive content doesn't sell." It does. It's just a little bit harder because it's not as massively in your face as negative content.44:47: Why do you think cats playing pianos are the most viral content in the internet? [7:59]: I just always wanted to own my own business, because I saw how difficult it was on my mom when I went to college. She poured everything into me and I was her job, basically. And then I was gone, and she didn’t have anything that was just hers. And I just told myself, I’m not ever going to do that. [13:04]: The first question I always as is, do you want a business, or do you want a hobby? There’s nothing wrong with it being a hobby. But if you want to be a business, you have to know business, you have to treat it like a business, you have to know that businesses make money. [19:24]: There are flower designers who have really great courses out there, but they’re sharing maybe 65% of what they know, because they can’t share it all because they’re still very invested in that business. I’m okay if I never did touch another flower again, so I’m willing to share everything. [27:16]: You can’t build something if you’re looking left and right all the time. You’ve got to keep your head down, you’ve got to work on your own thing. Because it’s not going to grow. You’re never going to move the needle on your business if you are constantly trying to emulate what other people are doing. And it’s easy if you’re following somebody and you’re just like, you know, let’s be honest, like going to the bathroom and you’re on your phone, and then you see a competitor and they did a floral pop-up. You’re like, “Oh no! I need to do a full pop up”, which is a natural human reaction. [38:18]: There’s one thing that I know, its sales. Sales is three parts. Sales is the sales pitch. Sales is the actual sale. And most importantly, it’s the follow-up. [49:32]: I have all kinds of struggles… And we had a team meeting. And everyone on the team meeting is talking about what we have to do in the next four days. And I interrupted the meeting at one point, and I said, “Okay listen, guys in April…” And they’re like, “Jessica, no. We’re dealing with right now.” And I’m like, “Wait, someone needs to make this note, because this needs to be done for April.” And y’all know in April, I’m going to be thinking about October. His most recent claim to fame is that for his hundredth episode, he had Seth Godin on his show.   Episode Highlights: [3:18]- Tim: But actually, I was in the top 2% of wage earners in the country. And I don’t say that to boast. But to just, you know, it is hard to walk away from something like that. But I didn’t feel purpose in what I was doing. I felt like, and I knew that I was being a lousy husband, and even worse parent.   [5:44]- Estie: I get it, you’re there, you’re struggling, you get this kind of download, you feel like okay, I’m going to be dead or worse. Yeah. And I do think there’s worse than death. Death, I think is not so bad.   [7:06]- Tim: The World Wide Web did not exist. You know, the, my first computer? Of course, we didn’t have any hard drives or anything, you had to run everything off floppy disk cats.   [12:36]- Tim: So instead of spending millions and millions of dollars, I think I spent invested $25,000 and, all of a sudden, we had a total state of the art product, the only one in the world with Canadian content in it.   [18:42]- Tim: The deal was that if you pay to get to Nova Scotia, I’ll pay for two nights in this really high-class resort, I’ll provide your meals, the entertainment disposal program.   [30:50]- Tim: The other thing that I don’t like about word freedom is, you know, let’s get honest about this thing. I mean, do we want to be free from obligations to our family? Do we want to be free from obligations to our community? Do we want to be free from obligations to make the world a better place? I don’t.   [32:17]: Estie: I’d love to spend a couple minutes on eye on that financial business literacy because I think it is so important. So many people struggle in their businesses, just because they don’t understand numbers. You know, the numbers don’t lie.   [50:18]: Estie: I’m going to show you a really simple scale. This actually works amazing as a mastermind or a group coaching program. They say that in group coaching, people benefit, in some ways more than one-on-one, because they hear the questions from other people that didn’t realize they had and wouldn’t have thought to ask, but, they needed that answer. [30:50]- Tim: The other thing that I don’t like about word freedom is, you know, let’s get honest about this thing. I mean, do we want to be free from obligations to our family? Do we want to be free from obligations to our community? Do we want to be free from obligations to make the world a better place? I don’t.
