We Want The D's "So Long" Spectacular

In February 2015, Vicky, Nolan and Jill kicked off their podcast odyssey by talking about Disney's very first feature-length animated movie. So it's fitting that, almost eight years later, we end our regularly scheduled programming by talking about the most recent Disney feature-length animated movie, STRANGE WORLD. And hopefully it won't be their last, even though it absolutely tanked at the box office.

At long last, our hosts have made it to the Disney movie that needs no introduction - THE LION KING. Having already watched the disappointing live-action remake, it's time to return to Disney's OG version of MULAN, and ask the important questions all you D-Lovers have come to reliably expect. Does this movie stand proud amongst the best of the 90s Renaissance, or does it leave something to be desired? Is "I'll Make a Man Out of You" an S-tier song, or merely an A++? And, of course, this being We Want The D, our hosts have to ask where Li Shang sits in the "hottest cartoon man" category.

Could it be the global pandemic that struck mere months after this movie's release? Impossible to say, really, but our hosts sure do have a lot to say about this movie.

WWTD 382 - Frozen II: Oops, All Ballads

Our hosts have watched more than a few stories that featured characters who had been or are orphaned in the course of the movie. BIG HERO 6 is a unique movie in that it dares to ask - what if Disney did a double orphan? Incredibly sad and surprising, yes, but also not a bad film. Because unlike so many other orphan movies where these characters are not allowed to grieve properly, this family animated movie is all about grief. And while that may sound like a bummer, it's pulled off in large part thanks to the loveable and huggable Baymax.

Disney films have enchanted and shaped childhoods for over 75 years, but when you watch them as adults there are things that make you want to unfreeze Walt's head and say "What The Hell, Guy!?" Tune in each week to hear Vicky, Nolan, and Jill rip apart, analyse and laugh at beloved childhood classics from the Disney catalogue.

Very informative and funny look into some of the obscure and bizarre films in the back catalogue, in addition to some old favorites.  Even though I may not always agree with everything they say, listening to them say it is always a good time!

We're diving back into the wonderful world movies based on Disney Channel original series on We Want The D this week, and Vicky, Nolan and Jill couldn't be more excited. While none of us may have been big Duff-fiends in the height of her Disney career, the Lizzie McGuire star was certainly pervasive enough that we had an idea of what we were in store for, and THE LIZZIE McGUIRE MOVIE did not disappoint. Beautiful girl supposedly a social outcast because she is clumsy? Check. Eighteen year old who looks like a preteen next to actual preteens? Check. Nonsensical and unexplained plot about doppelgängers that nobody blinks twice at? Check. Terribly written and produced pop song? Check. Bad, like really bad, accents? Check, check, check. This movie hit all the right benchmarks that make it so wrong on so many levels, and it made it a blast to watch and talk about.

Luckily for everyone, Disney's adaption of HOLES is not only faithful, but handily done as well. Lots of that has to do with the very game cast, from Eartha Kitt to Patricia Arquette to a fresh-faced, controversy free Shia Labeouf and plenty of other stand-outs in both the adult and child characters across the three timelines (have we mentioned this movie has a lot going on?). And while there's things to quibble over in the direction or soundtrack choices, overall this movie is a delight to watch, talk about, and needlessly compare it to the book on which it is based.

It's been a busy summer of remakes for Disney, but it's finally over (at least for now) with the release of their updated version of THE LION KING. That's right all the words, notes and even some voices that you loved from the beloved animated classic, now with 100% more photorealistic looking animals. It's so similar, you'll gasp in wonder, exclaiming "what's the point?" as Timon and Pumbaa slurp down some very real looking creepy crawlies. You'll wince when you hear a line delivery that just doesn't sound quite right. But it's still The Lion King, so you'll probably enjoy it anyway.

The franchise got so big, in fact, that the elevated budget of the third and final installment meant it had to be released in theatres...so here we are. This week on We Want The D, our hosts try to parse the third installment in a trilogy with (in at least two out of three cases) no context from the first two made-for-tv movies. And while the plot is anything from overly complicated, there is still plenty to puzzle over. But mostly this movie is just annoying - the songs are annoying, the acting is annoying, the writing is annoying. Kenny Ortega strikes again in HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3: SENIOR YEAR.

For a series that start on a such high note of optimism and celebration, things sure have come a long way. Last week, Vicky, Nolan and Jill raged against the fourth installment of Disney's mega-franchise - this week it's a sad acceptance where all they could do is laugh at the ridiculous of Jack Sparrow's latest non-adventure. Considering this fifth movie both relies on and completely ignores the story set up in the original trilogy, it proves understandably frustrating for anyone who expects even the smallest amount of continuity in a mythology. Instead we get a completely broken timeline, character motives based on nothing, and a general wet noodle of a movie.

We end at the beginning. A journey that started with the Wildcats of...uh...High School Musical High? (Sure, let's go with that) graduating having learned that they're all in this together begins with them auditioning for the Winter Musicale and ultimately learning that they're all in this together. It should be no surprise that in the end at least two thirds of our hosts would never quite grasp how this franchise became the phenomenon it did, but at least it gave us some laughs along the way.

It's the penultimate entry of the Summer of Sequels, so it felt appropriate to return to Agrabah for one last magic carpet ride with Aladdin and the gang. Including a returning Robin Williams voicing Genie, who they really let off the leash for this one. But for all those obscure impressions and an actually halfway decent story, ALADDIN AND THE KING OF THIEVES is still a Disney direct-to-video sequel, so its not without its shortcomings. The animation is, shall we say, janky. Jasmine is done dirty in pretty much every imaginable way. The songs are, well, tolerable, but mostly because they are rip-offs of the songs from the first movie. Basically, saying its better than Return of Jafar is a textbook case of being damned with faint praise.

Welcome, D Lovers, to the extra special, extra beefy 100th episode of We Want The D! It's definitely cause for celebration, but we're not here to celebrate ourselves (well, maybe a little); we're using this excuse to celebrate what many consider to be the pinnacle of Disney animated film-making - BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. A beloved classic for many, including Vicky, Nolan and Jill, our hosts have nothing but love for the brilliant songs, top-tier voice acting, and wet, loose hair that all feature prominently (some might say equally) in this movie. Even the somewhat dulled visuals, only apparent thanks to the advancement of Diamond Edition Blu-rays, can't dull our love for this film. It's a regular ol' love-fest and gush-fest, not just for this movie, but for you - our loyal listeners - whether you've been with us from the start or are just tuning in this week. It's definitely cause for celebration, but we're not here to celebrate ourselves (well, maybe a little); we're using this excuse to celebrate what many consider to be the pinnacle of Disney animated film-making - BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. A beloved classic for many, including Vicky, Nolan and Jill, our hosts have nothing but love for the brilliant songs, top-tier voice acting, and wet, loose hair that all feature prominently (some might say equally) in this movie. Even the somewhat dulled visuals, only apparent thanks to the advancement of Diamond Edition Blu-rays, can't dull our love for this film. It's a regular ol' love-fest and gush-fest, not just for this movie, but for you - our loyal listeners - whether you've been with us from the start or are just tuning in this week. WWTD 100 - Beauty and the Beast: Covered in Birds

It's been a minute since We Want The D took a trip to the old west, and on paper, going there with none other than Roddy McDowall seems like a promising proposition for prospecting fun. Is Disney's THE ADVENTURES OF BULLWHIP GRIFFIN one of the better Disney westerns we've watched? That's definitely an argument that can be made. Is it a rollicking good time from start to finish worth a viewer's time and attention? Well, depends which host you ask.

WWTD 247 - The Adventures of Bullwhip Griffin: Rowdy Roddy McDowall

For a place known as the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia is infamous for having some of the hardest-to-please and quick-to-anger fans across all sports. And it seems some of that aggression has rubbed off on our hosts' during this week's episode on Disney's INVINCIBLE. Because Vicky, Nolan and Jill have some Big Takes on Mark Wahlberg, the NFL and (oddly) especially recreational sports. It doesn't quite get to full-contact territory or anything...but it's not that far off, either!

Make no mistake, D-Lovers, there's plenty to talk about when it comes to HANNAH MONTANA: THE MOVIE, the theatrical film based on the Disney Channel property so massive, the House of Mouse convened a special conference of sixty old white dudes (probably) to discuss how to best market a teenage girl. The concept is silly, the themes are counter-productive, and the sitcom-y, slapstick humour doesn't quite translate to the big screen. But Vicky, Nolan and Jill really just use this episode as an excuse to talk about Miley Cyrus, and how she embodies the pre and post-Disney Star Child archetype - from squeaky clean performer to grinding with Beetlejuice at the VMAs and back again.

We've talked our fair share about Disney's recent trend of remaking their animated classics into live action spectacles here on We Want The D. But somehow, we forgot that this trend it older than the past few years. That in fact it dates back to the mid 90s, when for some reason, the people running the House of Mouse decided it would be a good idea to throw an absurd amount of money at making a live action version of their classic 101 DALMATIANS. The result is some pretty impressive production design, elaborate action set pieces staged in downtown London, and of course an absurd amount of merchandising. What nobody working on the movie seemed to realize is taking movie that derived its charm from its talking animal characters and reorienting the story so it centered on the boring human counterparts was an absurdly bad idea. The result is something that looks a lot like 101 Dalmatians, but a soulless, bland version of the first half of the movie and a second half that is basically Home Alone.

But what is often left out is how gaga everyone went for this Wonderful World of Disney staging of Rogers and Hammerstein's CINDERELLA. And on paper, our hosts can see why. Whitney Houston! Brandi! Whoopi! Victor Garber! A veritable who's who of titans of song and stage. But in execution? Erm. Well, it is Cinderella, that's for sure. But let's just say turns out when you remove the fun talking animals, it's a lot easier to notice that there's a lot of close-ups of feet in this story - and that's kind of a metaphor for the whole production.
