REPLAYED CONTENT: Rebecca Hopkins talks about how she found herself going through early menopause in her early 30’s and this affected many aspects of her life, including her ability to have children. She had her children using an egg donor and whilst she was raising her small children she found herself in the midst of quite intense menopausal symptoms. Her doctor put her on hormones to combat early osteoporosis. This meant that her sex drive shot through the roof and she became rather rampant. He talks about when he first realised that he was suffering from panic attacks after experiencing the most frightening event of his whole life. Eventually, he saw a psychiatrist and got to the bottom of what he was going through and began to receive treatment and support. He recognised that he experienced several red flags that he initially ignored which led to his panic attacks taking hold. He feels that dealing with anxiety is a battle and without the support of friends, family and professionals, he felt very alone. He acknowledges that it can be more difficult for men to discuss more personal issues with each other and he wants people to understand that every time he discussed his anxiety, it was a weight off his mind. Aaron is a rugby player and he found that when he opened up to his mates about his anxiety, they were very supportive and did not judge him. Aaron decided to start his own podcast ‘Talking Mental’ which will be released on Apple Podcasts on the 22nd of January. He began this podcast to start conversations about anxiety and mental health issues in general in a bid to help improve his own mental health and also to benefit his listeners who may also be struggling with similar issues. REPLAYED CONTENT: Vishal is my ex-student who suffered from mental health issues as a teen and I tried my best to support him. He was diagnosed as Bipolar at the age of 25. He talks to us about his mental health journey and explains how he was very pessimistic and lacked motivation for many years. He also suffered from anorexia as a teen and he shares how he faced this diagnosis. Vishal’s mental health went downhill at university and he found himself feeling suicidal. He could not overcome the shame he felt which was an underlying theme during his struggles. Finally, Vishal sought help and developed the tools that he needed to change the way that he was thinking. He turned his negative thoughts into reasonable thoughts as trying to make them into positive thoughts was too difficult. With medication and CBT, Vishal was able to turn his life around and is now in the happiest place that he has ever been. Vishal is a writer and a poet, and he shares some of his work with us. One of his poems was a real surprise to me and it made me cry. This is a beautiful podcast with a wonderful young man who I am so proud of. Jason discusses his journey of understanding his sexual identity and how he had to come to terms with this and aligned his Christian faith with his acceptance of himself. Jason shares the experience of seeking therapy and then having to come out to his wife and how they worked through this significant event as a family. Jason talks about how there is a gap in the support available for teens who discover that they have a gay father and he feels his kids would have benefited from this kind of support in the early days when he told them he was gay. Jason reveals that he was bullied as a child and had an explosive father, and this coupled with his suppression of his sexuality, led to some mental health issues. He praises the support that he had from medical professionals and also from his church community. Jason has become an accidental activist in the Uniting Church and wants to add value to the community. He is a youth worker in his church and is also working to elevate social justice issues in both the executive world and the local community. He is a wonderful role model for any LGBTQ+  people in the Christian community and his story is inspirational and thought provoking. Dr. Michael Eason is a psychologist who specialises in many different areas; one being affirmative therapy for members of the LGBTQ+ community. Michael explains the difference between gender identity and sexual orientation. We focus our conversation on transgender support and explore many of the challenges that trans youth and their families face.  Michael emphasises how important family support is for any LGBTQ+ youth who are in the process of exploring their identity. Families face many changes when a child expresses that they are transgender, and Michael gives tips on how to approach this new chapter in a child’s life. We also discuss how schools should develop diversity and inclusion policies and create a culture of acceptance and support for all LGBTQ+ teens. Michael shares his own coming out story as a gay teen growing up in the USA in a religious family. This experience enables Michael to really connect with the LGBTQ+ people that he works with today. Tegan Smyth is an Australian Lawyer working in Hong Kong who runs a program for refugees called Table of Two Cities. It is a community project where refugees tell their stories and share their culture through food. A shared meal can bring both sides of Hong Kong to one shared table.  Two sides of the city, united by an idea, by acceptance, understanding and by food. Table of Two Cities enables refugees to give something of themselves to the local community and feel valued and appreciated. Tegan reminds us that ‘food is a universal medium to communicate your understanding of the world’. Tegan is a survivor of assault and she shares her experience with us and explains how helping others, is a way for her navigate her own trauma. She wants to hold space for people who do not have the spaced opened to them. Tegan feels that empathy is a gift and facing her trauma has inspired her to strive to create something worthwhile in the lives of others and helped her find a purpose in her own life. Tegan Smyth is an Australian Lawyer working in Hong Kong who runs a program for refugees called Table of Two Cities. It is a community project where refugees tell their stories and share their culture through food. A shared meal can bring both sides of Hong Kong to one shared table.  Two sides of the city, united by an idea, by acceptance, understanding and by food. Table of Two Cities enables refugees to give something of themselves to the local community and feel valued and appreciated. Tegan reminds us that ‘food is a universal medium to communicate your understanding of the world’. Tegan is a survivor of assault and she shares her experience with us and explains how helping others, is a way for her navigate her own trauma. She wants to hold space for people who do not have the spaced opened to them. Sara Tang is the host of ‘Better in Bed’ podcast where she discusses everything imaginable about sex and sexuality. She feels that her podcast is a wonderful medium to bring more sex positive resources to the Hong Kong community, where sex is not always openly discussed. There is somewhat of a social taboo surrounding sex in Hong Kong and Sara is hoping to change this mindset. Sara states that historically, Chinese people were very sexual but it appears that they are much more repressed in this day and age. Sara grew up in a very restrictive Christian environment and she did not have any sex education as a child. Sara would like to see sex education as a mandatory subject in Hong Kong schools and she is doing her part make this happen. “Learning about sex should be a normal part of life” Sara claims. Sara used to have a blog about sex and she also trained with a sexologist. She is very well qualified to discuss all topics related to sex, including consent, orgasms, pornography and masturbation, just to name a few. Jason Masters was a married father of two children who discovered later in life that he was gay. Jason discusses his journey of understanding his sexual identity and how he had to come to terms with this and aligned his Christian faith with his acceptance of himself. Jason shares the experience of seeking therapy and then having to come out to his wife and how they worked through this significant event as a family. Jason talks about how there is a gap in the support available for teens who discover that they have a gay father and he feels his kids would have benefited from this kind of support in the early days when he told them he was gay. Jason reveals that he was bullied as a child and had an explosive father, and this coupled with his suppression of his sexuality, led to some mental health issues. He praises the support that he had from medical professionals and also from his church community. Jason has become an accidental activist in the Uniting Church and wants to add value to the community. He is a youth worker in his church and is also working to elevate social justice issues in both the executive world and the local community. He is a wonderful role model for any LGBTQ+  people in the Christian community and his story is inspirational and thought provoking. Sara Tang is a sexuality educator, pleasure coach and creator/host of the ‘Better in Bed’ podcast. She shares frank, informative and educational information about pornography and the impact that it is having on today’s society. She was unhappy with the superficial nature of social media, so she created content on Instagram that offers comfort to others in their personal struggles. The stories, written by a diverse group of people, evoke empathy, catharsis and healing through sharing more deep and meaningful aspects of life. “Social media can enhance our sense of isolation” and Spill Stories provides a platform for us to feel connected. Tiffany suggests that we should “screw the narratives that we are supposed to play into and be yourself!” Spill Stories have many different themes ranging from ‘Sex and Power’ to ‘Insecurities’. These stories promote creativity and provide a voice for women of colour. Writing can empower people and Tiffany hopes that her platform will connect people across the globe. Dr Brenda Alegre shares her story of a happy childhood in the Philippines where she felt loved and supported as she evolved into her true self: a transgender woman. She worked hard at school, had lots of friends, felt loved by her family and admired many super heroes, including Wonder Woman who was her favourite. She faced negativity and discrimination at times as an adult, but this just made her stronger and inspired her to work harder to be successful and make a difference in the world. Brenda is an incredible person who has a multitude of achievements to her name. Some of her accomplishments include being a Registered Psychologist, she is on the Board of Directors of STRAP – The Society of Transsexual Women Advocates in the Philippines and she is also the Trans Secretariat of ILGA; the International LGBT Association. Brenda is a Lecturer at the University of Hong Kong where she teaches Sexuality and Gender. As an activist for LGBTQ and women in both the Philippines and Hong Kong, she has been invited to speak at many prestigious international events. Brenda discusses her dreams and fears with us whilst sharing her wisdom and knowledge about diversity, inclusion, sexuality and gender. Bess Hepworth is the mother of a hearing and sight impaired young boy who is the most joyful and inspiring child that you might ever meet. He has a degenerative condition which requires Bess and her wife to travel from Hong Kong to Australia for his treatment. Bess shares her inspirational parenting journey with us and the challenges and rewards she and her wife have faced along the way, whilst raising this two beautiful sons. Lexi is a teenager with OCD, anxiety, mood disorder and depression. She shares her story of how she coped with her mental health issues during her school years and the challenges that she faced along the way. Lexi talks about her OCD obsessions and compulsions and the impact that these fears and rituals had on her life. Lexi could not go to school for many months as her washing compulsions became so hard to manage and the stress of trying to hide her OCD from others wore her down. She talks about the CBT and exposure therapy that helped turn her life around. Lexi reminds us that OCD is a selective and irrational disorder and she knows that it will be something that she will have to manage for the rest of her life. Often her mental health issues made her feel worthless and she would sleep for days on end and could not get out of bed. Lexi is a youth ambassador for the ODC and Anxiety Support Group in Hong Kong and is a mental health advocate. Lexi is an incredibly courageous teenager who is an inspiration to others.
