In the early nineties he was director at Jikoji Zen Center. Throughout this time he taught visual arts at various schools and universities, including Naropa University, where he also taught meditation and Buddhism. Since that time, Mike has been the Resident Teacher and chief priest at Jikoji.

Shoho Michael Newhall began practicing and studying with Kobun Chino Otogawa Roshi in the early seventies, and was ordained by Kobun in the mid-eighties. In the early nineties he was director at Jikoji Zen Center. Throughout this time he taught visual arts at various schools and universities, including Naropa University, where he also taught meditation and Buddhism. Robert Yanasak

This week’s talk is by Robert Yanasak. Robert (Seiko Taikan) is retired as a Mechanical Design Draftsman/Supervisor at Perkin-Elmer, Leica and other Bay Area companies.Robert began sitting in the Fall of 1966 in San Francisco, sitting his first Rinzai sesshin with his first teacher Soen Nakagawa Roshi in the spring of 1967. He continued to sit alone but sat sesshins with Soen Roshi when he came in once a year. Eventually he sat with Eido Shimano Roshi at Dai Bosatsu for their first and second practice periods in the fall of 75 and spring of 76. Returning to Berkeley, he began to study with Kobun Chino Otogawa who ordained him a monk in the spring of 1980. He practiced with Kobun until the summer of 1984 when he moved into Berkeley Zen Center, where he lived and practiced with Sojun Mel Weitsman for nine years, sole purpose to dissolve this illusion that practice and having a working life were separate, eventually leaving to practice with Akiba Roshi who gave him transmission in 2006 after two practice periods in Japan, one in 2000 and the other in 2006.He writes: “My attraction to Buddhism wasn’t to be a Buddhist but rather to follow the Buddha’s advice that if I wanted to know what was going on around me I needed to turn my attention inwards and look there. The rest evolved circumstantially. I love my practice more then anything and I know I’ve never been a very good buddhist based on the standards of what that might look like.”

Eric Remington

Eric Remington was an early student of Kobun, Jikoji's Founder, in the early 1970s. After years spent studying with Kobun and founding a school for children, Eric was ordained and subsequently trained at Tassajara Monastery for a year. Allison Draper

Allison was priest-ordained in 2016 in the Suzuki Roshi lineage, by Myoan Grace Schireson, and continues an established meditation practice of many years.  After a 30-year career as a marketing executive, Allison began a multi-year journey to become a professional healthcare chaplain. In this role, she finds Right Livelihood that integrates her priest vows with engaged Buddhist intention to be of service in the world.  Rev. Allison is board certified with the Association of Professional Chaplains and Advanced Practice Board Certified in Hospice and Palliative Care. She is a graduate of Upaya Buddhist Chaplaincy program and holds a Master’s in Divinity from Shogaku Zen Institute.  She completed Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) residency at Stanford Health Care. Allison currently works full-time leading the Spiritual Care team of 9 professional chaplains at Stanford Children’s Hospital. She lives in Campbell with her husband Jeff and enjoys playing tennis, baking pies and spending time with her three young adult children when they return home to visit.

Chuck Hutchcraft

Chuck Hutchcraft teaches from the confluence of Buddhist and Western psychologies. He is particularly interested in the impact trauma has on dharma practice. Chuck began Zen practice in 1991 and was ordained in the Katigiri Roshi lineage in 2005 by Sojun Diane Martin, abbess of the Udumbara Zen Center in Evanston, IL. He received dharma transmission in the Kobun Chino lineage from Sensei Dean Williams in 2019. Chuck is the guiding teacher of Zen communities in northern and central Illinois and leads on-going mindfulness meditation groups. A licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist, Chuck was trained and certified as a mindfulness teacher by Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach.

A year or two later she, with her young daughter, moved into the residence with a changing group of caretakers and friends, one of  whom she later married. During and after that time she attended sesshins at Hidden Villa with Kobun's students from Los Altos, including Angie Boissevain, who some years later became her teacher. In the years that followed, she finished her MA in Creative Writing and began teaching poetry, literature and writing in colleges and private workshops in Santa Cruz, the Mojave Dessert and San Diego, where she and Balin now live.  She received ordination and transmission from Angie and has since taught at several Jikoji sesshins. She is a teacher at Floating Zendo San Diego and is now one of the teachers at Floating Zendo San Jose.

Cliff occasionally serves as Jikoji's administration oversight manager, helps orchestrate Jikoji's internet communications, and maintains Jakkoan Zendo and Jikoji Archives.Shoho Michael Newhall began practicing and studying with Kobun Chino Otogawa Roshi in the early seventies, and was ordained by Kobun in the mid-eighties. In the early nineties he was director at Jikoji Zen Center. Throughout this time he taught visual arts at various schools and universities, including Naropa University, where he also taught meditation and Buddhism. Since that time, Mike has been the Resident Teacher and chief priest at Jikoji.

In 2009, Mark received the Jukai precepts and lay ordination from Eiko Carolyn Atkinson, a dharma heir of Jikoji founder Kobun Chino Otagowa Roshi. In 2018 Shoho Michael Newhall, Jikoji's guiding teacher, ordained Mark as a Zen priest in Kobun's Phoenix Cloud lineage.

He became a biologist and naturalist before living for several years in the desert, and more recently joined Jikoji as a Resident.

David Shapiro became a student of Chogyam  Trungpa, Rinpoche in 1973, and studied with him until his death in 1987.  David was the founding director of the Milwaukee Dharma Study Group,  now the Shambhala Center, and was a practicing internist for over 3  decades. He is currently involved with the Light of Berotsana  Translation Group and continues to practice within the context of  Tibetan Buddhism. David's talk will discuss the practice of Mind  Training, known as Lojong, brought to Tibet from India by the sage  Atisha in the 9th century. The practice centers on slogans that tease  the mind from its usual foundations.
