It’s important to have a business that’s built in a way that creates value, that makes it worth a high dollar value. What investors want to see is company documentation, they don’t just want to know the end result, they want to know the road you took to get there.  There is a reason why most people who set goals don't achieve them. They have been sold a bill of goods that setting unachievable unrealistic goals is somehow it way to motivate ourselves.  When I go to an event and the overenthusiastic "goalsetting" speaker gets up I always have to go out in the hallway. The person who tells everyone in the room to write down the biggest income goal they have ever imagined, then cross it out and double it.  I cringe every time I hear this. Anyone who tells you to set goals like this isn't going to stick around to make sure that you actually achieve them. This was a particular area of weakness for me. I always felt like I was born with a different operating system and I did not understand the people around me. If you couldn't tell, I've obsessed over the question 'How do you make businesses grow?'   One of the biggest challenges here is understanding what to focus on during the right times.   Working hard can be a great thing.  Working hard on the wrong things (even unintentionally) can take you backwards.   Have you ever thought to yourself 'I wish I could just go back to doing it all myself.' We had an amazing conversation, and it started out--as it does for so many entrepreneurs who are running multimillion-dollar businesses--with her feeling like there was something wrong with her. She felt like she needed to shift her mindset or change her thinking around this issue. Something she was doing in front of her team that did not make her appear "as her full, authentic self." Once the conversation concluded, the concerns about her mindset, herself, and how she was showing up to her team significantly changed.  I offered her an entirely different solution to her problem. If you're trying to grow and scale a business, mindset often has far less to do with the issues you’re facing than is perceived in the market today. Instead, I could see that Lori was dealing with something that could only be adequately fixed by surrounding herself with a process that allowed her to show up in front of her team in a predictable, reliable, and stable way. For visionary entrepreneurs, one of the biggest fantasies out there is to hire one person who is going to do all the things in our business that we don’t want to do, so we can stay in the visionary seat and grow our business without any frustration or pain. The issue is, it takes a lot more than just a person; it takes an entire system to protect and support an entrepreneur.  A business is nothing more than a series of processes that are repeated overtime to generate a consistent results. It seems pretty simple, so why is running a business so difficult?  There is a reason why over 90% of businesses in the United States are sole proprietorships. Very few business owners ever build processes that are clear enough for them to get help.  By building processes, on paper first, outside of any system, you are building the foundational value of your company. Not only that but you're actually making it easier for you to run.  When you have the checklist or process document someone his been using for a function in your organization and that person leaves, you can quickly replace them. This will build a new sense of security and safety for you in your organization.  You will need it, because when you build a deeper process, your company will grow much faster and it is much more likely that you will be promoting people rather than having them leave.

 Don't let anyone convince you that you have to live a life of sacrifice to be successful. For me, I create the life I want today. I intentionally build my business around who I am so that I can live the perfect day of my life every day.  If you're constantly hustling and working yourself into the ground so that someday you might have some payoff, ask yourself what if someday never comes? Don't put off being excited about your life and doing what you actually want. Build your life right now, the way you want it.

What you are quitting it depends on where you are. For some it will be quit and go back and get a job. For others it will be quit fire the team and go back to working by yourself. If you have a team, it may be quit growing it and go back to where it was manageable.  It doesn't matter which have, none of them are real.  Quitting is just a fantasy for people like us.

We are more sensitive to the world around us, we see opportunity and risk in a different way and we are driven to continue to go forward and seek momentum.  Anything that gets in our way or causes constraint throws us off.  How much, we don't know. But it is clear that when people like us experience too much pressure and noise things do not go well.  There is one place where far too much of the world invites rather than defends against pressure and noise and that is what we put in our mouths.  This may be one of the most important podcasts I have recorded.
