Celebrate Pride! – Gender, Sexuality, and Spanish for Everyone

In this introductory lesson to our series on Chagas disease, we present a clinical dialogue where a healthcare provider recommends screening for the disease, and the subsequent follow-up conversation that takes place after the patient tests positive for Chagas disease. This clinical dialogue was adapted from a dialogue I received in English, from a researcher named Maddie Dauphinais. Maddie works with a team of researchers and clinicians from Boston University and Boston Medical Center called INSECT. INSECT stands for Implementing Novel Strategies for Education and Chagas Testing.  Chagas disease, caused by infection with the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, is primarily found in Latin America. Infection can lead to heart disease, intestinal problems, among other health consequences. It affects hundreds of thousands of migrants living in the US. The goal of the INSECT team is to raise awareness about Chagas disease and improve its screening and diagnosis nationally. This dialogue will help providers discuss the screening process and the results of testing with their patients from Mexico, Central America and South America.  Joining me for this lesson is my Spanish teacher from México, Daniela Grave. In this lesson, we explore verbs with the body and learn when to use the pronominal (reflexive) vs the non-pronominal form of the verb. While working on our latest series covering common orthopedic injuries in Spanish, I noticed how the verb to say, "I injured my knee," is pronominal: "Me lesioné la rodilla." Whereas the verb to say, "I bent my knee," is not: "Doblé la rodilla." So why is that? We learn this and more in this audio lesson. Simplemente necesitan aprender cómo pueden usar sus habilidades para llevar al futuro sus vidas y no retrasarse por estar distraídos tan fácilmente.Medicamentos y asesoramiento3:58SS: Yo sé que hay un medicamento que puede tomar pero me preocupa que vaya a cambiar a la niña. Me gusta cómo ella es, sólo que se mete en tantos problemas.D: Cuando se usa en una manera correcta la medicina puede ayudar mucho especialmente en combinación con el asesoramiento para que ella pueda tomar mejores decisiones. Cada medicamento lleva beneficios y riesgos, pero tenemos que tomar en cuenta que también hay riesgo en no tomar medicamentos. En cuanto al TDAH, el riesgo de no tomar medicamentos incluye bajo rendimiento en los campos académicos y sociales. En niños con más edad el riesgo de adicciones a drogas, apuestas, sexo, alcohol y cosas así, es hasta el 40%. Con tratamiento el riesgo cae al 14%, cerca del porcentaje en la población general.Patrones de comportamiento5:05SS: Suena grave, doctor. Estoy bien preocupada.D: Yo no estoy preocupado porque es claro que la podemos ayudar. Pero tenemos que recordar que la personalidad son patrones de comportamiento a lo largo del tiempo. Cuanto más tiempo le sea permitido seguir con los patrones de comportamiento de ser distraída y alborotadora, será más difícil crear nuevos patrones de conducta positiva en el futuro. Por eso, le recomiendo que ella tome la medicina todos los días incluyendo los fines de semana y días de vacaciones también. Así puede crear nuevas pautas de comportamiento en casa y también en la comunidad y sobre todo en el campo de béisbol.Cómo funcionan los medicamentos5:54SS: ¿Cómo funcionan estos medicamentos? ¿Y cuáles son los efectos secundarios?D: Querría empezar con un tipo de medicina que llamamos medicamentos estimulantes. Se toman estos medicamentos en la mañana. Estimulan la parte del cerebro que dice, “Enfócate. Pon atención.” También ayudan a bajar la conducta impulsiva. Los efectos secundarios pueden ser la supresión del apetito, que por lo general va a mejorar en la segunda semana de tomarlos. Estimulan el cerebro y como la cafeína, si los tomara demasiado tarde en el día podrían causarle más dificultad en dormir. Así que siempre se los damos temprano en el día. En algunos niños pueden causar que crezcan más lentamente especialmente si requieren una dosis más alta.Monitoreo6:53SS: Eso me preocupa mucho.D: Entiendo pero vamos a monitorear su altura y su peso cada tres meses. Entonces, tratamos de darles un seguimiento más cercano. Algunos con antecedentes de problemas en embarazos anteriores, como los más comunes: hipertensión, sangrados y algunas veces infecciones. ¿Verdad? Entonces, tratamos de darles un seguimiento más cercano. Algunos con antecedentes de problemas en embarazos anteriores, como los más comunes: hipertensión, sangrados y algunas veces infecciones. ¿Verdad?
