Today is the final installment in our three-part series on burnout, and we’re ending on a really great note. In the first episode, we talked with designer, Katie MacAvoy about how she was knocking at the door of burnout and deciding which direction to take her business. Next, we chatted with artist, BJ Lantz about how she finally decided to give up a lucrative, but painful area of her business, in lieu of new ideas, and a fresh approach to her art. In today’s conversation, we talk with another artist, Megan Carty, and how she faced down her demons, and came out triumphant, with a new focus, and renewed vigor toward her work. This is part two of our burnout series, and this conversation takes a different outlook on dealing with it. Sometimes pushing through the burn is no longer an option. Sometimes it’s better to step away from the thing that’s killing you, even if you love it. Today on the show, artist BJ Lantz comes on to talk about her creative pursuits, and how she’s finally decided to let part of her business go. As an illustrator and designer, she established herself with a successful licensing career… until the rules changed. When the work became tougher, and the money became thinner, there’s only so much BJ could take before making what could possibly be the toughest decision she’s every been faced with. Not all that we do revolves around the actual doing of creative things. I’ve been playing music on the show for quite awhile now, and I started because I always enjoy sharing good music with people. I figured I could help expose folks to some new bands and music they might never get a chance to hear. Ever since I started playing music, I’ve gotten at least one email a week from a different listeners telling me how much they appreciate the tunes I share. Also, music is a big part of my creative spirit—I can’t work without it. This week being a holiday week, and we’re all trying to keep from gorging ourselves on turkey and treats, or we’re avoiding family while we watch an endless cycle of football games on TV, maybe you’ll take some time to listen to this playlist. Maybe it will keep you company on the long ride to Grandma’s house, or it’s in your ears as you’re camped out in front of Best Buy on Black Friday. Fresh Rag Show Mixtape #1

I posed a question in the Fresh Rag Army recently asking people about their stories of burnout, and if they’d be willing to share their story on the show. In record time, I had several people chime in ready to talk about it. Because of the way things worked out, I decided to show burnout from three different perspectives. First, from someone who is on the precipice of wondering where to go next with their work. Then I have a conversation with someone who dealt with the burnout by choosing to quit. Finally is a chat with an artist about finding a resurgence in their work, and embracing it with new vigor. The first conversation is with Katie MacAvoy of Whiskey Ginger Collective, and she was the first to respond to my question, with this statement. “That is straight up 100% me right now. I got pretty down in the dumps about it. It seems like I’m at a crossroads where my shop (@whiskeygingercollective) just isn’t bringing me the joy it used to. Perhaps, that’s ok; it may just be time for something else—something new.” This conversation with Katie takes on a life of it’s own, and it’s inspiring despite the ominous subject matter. Today is all about the rants and raves for different things I’ve run across in the last few weeks that I believe need discussing. There’s no conversation this time around, but I promise, I’ll give you something to talk about. In the first part, I talk about a new podcast I’m into, and how the latest episode that centers around Robert Frost’s most popular poem, “The Road Not Taken,” is one of the most widely mistaken pieces of art, and how the misinterpretation is affecting our decision making process. Second, there’s a lot of chatter lately about Amazon Handmade, and how it’s going to effect Etsy, or not effect Etsy, as the case may be. It’s a hot topic, but I settle the score pretty quick on this one. Third is all about intellectual property, and how we need to be 1. careful when working with friends, and 2. be sure to watch how much inspiration we take from others. Also, I go into a long bit about my new theories on the Starving Artist mindset, and why I think it’s the people who are not creative that might have this whole topic wrong from the start. I’m not sure what it is about Twitter, but it seems to have spurred most of the conversations this month. I met Grace, Rena, and now Joy Wilson all on Twitter recently, and each episode has become a part of my top favorites. Joy (aka Joy the Baker) is a formally trained baker who turned her passion into words, her words into a community, and her community into a legion. She built a small empire with that legion, branching off into several avenues including books, videos, and a podcast network of her own. There’s no moss gathering on this rock star. In today’s chat, I talk with Joy about her comeuppance, her growth, and how she keeps from spreading too thin. We talk business success, and also quite a bit of nonsense. Janine Vangool of Uppercase Magazine Can Do Anything!

Here at Fresh Rag HQ, I get multiple emails a week from people asking to be part of the site, either as a blog post, or featured on the podcast. It’s a good problem to have because I get to discover new people on a regular basis. A majority of the requests are not a good fit for the show, and it happens so often, I get a little jaded with the requests. Several people have come to me in the past and asked me my thoughts on how to approach selling products that should be regarded as higher quality and higher price point. In those situations, I contend that attitude toward the work is as important as the materials used to craft the item. How we look at ourselves as creators, and what we appreciate as being “high end” in the marketplace says a lot about us, and most of us have a problem seeing beyond the scope of our own budgets, even if we are shooting much higher with our product pricing. Starving Artist vs. Hungry Artist – Which Are You?

Creative Business Success at the Corner of Marketing and Purpose

Many of us entrepreneurs have this dream of living a lifestyle that allows us to go where we want, travel to an fro, making tracks in any direction that we deem necessary, but very few of us seem to make the jump. We have ‘responsibilities’ like families, bills, a business that’s rooted, and the idea of picking up stakes to head off into the next green pasture seems like a near impossibility. Lord knows I’ve wanted to travel more, spend more time abroad, and see wonders that I will never find her in the States, but then reality sets in and we always find reasons why we can’t; I find reasons why I can’t, but there are other options. Today I brought on Natalie Sisson, the Suitcase Entrepreneur to talk about such problems because she is living the life she wants, and it’s not just because she gets to travel wherever her whims might take her. In fact, she does have dreams of settling down a little bit, but don’t tell all her reader’s that.
