Marian Goodman Gallery invites you to celebrate the NYC launch of Arabesque by Dara Birnbaum, the first in a series of innovative works published by D’ORO D’ART. Dara Birnbaum was in conversation with the curators of the book, Barbara London and Valentino Catricalà, and the publisher Salvatore Dino, on 22 March 2022 at Marian Goodman Gallery New York.For her book commissioned by D’ORO D’ART Project, Birnbaum took on the challenge of transforming her four-channel video, Arabesque (2011) into a unique, vertically-formatted single screen. Integrating the latest in software and hardware, the highly skilled designers at D’ORO D’ART successfully created a hybrid object, which is a book, a sculpture, and a video artwork all in one.

Artist and MFA Art Practice and MFA Fine Arts faculty member Dara Birnbaum talks about her work. Presented by MFA Fine Arts.Birnbaum’s art has been shown at such institutions as the Metropolitan Museum of Art; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; Tate Modern, London; the Whitney Museum of American Art; Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; and S.M.A.K., Ghent. Her awards and honors include the 1991 TV Picture Prize, given at the International Festival of Video and Electronic Arts in Locarno, Switzerland; the 1988 Certificate in Recognition of Service and Contribution to the Arts, given by Harvard University; and the American Film Institute's Maya Deren Award for Independent Film and Video Artists, which she received in 1987.

TalkFriday, October 2, 7pmArtists Space Books &amp; Talks55 Walker StreetThis discussion will consider the construction, performance and broadcast of gender archetypes over the last fifty years, and how these have been transformed, critiqued and subverted within visual art – specifically in the work of Dara Birnbaum and Joan Jonas. Both were part of a generation of women artists who began working in the 60s and 70s, and were pioneers in their radical address of subjectivity, imagery, artistic processes and technology. Within the wider social and political context, their work contained a powerful message of transformation that was extremely prescient: firstly, in relationship to writing by theorists such as Judith Butler and Donna Haraway in the early 90s; and, more recently, the digital and virtual revolution’s effect on identity construction and performance.
