Today's episode features an expert physician on Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD): Dr. Brad Dickerson. In this episode we cover: The science of FTD, how it is different from Alzheimer's, updates on research, and more. Brad Dickerson, MD is Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School and Tom Rickles Chair in Progressive Aphasia Research, Leader of the Neuroimaging Core of the MGH Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, and Director of the Frontotemporal Disorders Unit at the Massachusetts General Hospital, an integrated multidisciplinary unit dedicated to the highest level of care of patients with these conditions. Dr. Dickerson is also a behavioral neurologist in the MGH Memory Disorders Unit. Dr. Dickerson is an active clinical consultant in many aspects of cognitive and behavioral neurology of neurodegenerative and related disorders, including frontotemporal dementia, primary progressive aphasia, Alzheimer's, mild cognitive impairment, posterior cortical atrophy, and related conditions, and the use of neuroimaging and other diagnostic markers in neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Dickerson runs a multidisciplinary team of 30 clinicians and scientists using advanced brain imaging and behavioral methods to study how memory, language, emotion, and social behaviors change in normal aging and in patients with neurodegenerative disease, with extensive funding from the National Institutes of Health. His team also studies new approaches to caregiving. He has published more than 195 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and has edited two books on dementia. He is active in mentoring trainees and in teaching, is Chair of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Council of the Massachusetts Alzheimer's Association and is Chair-Elect of the national Medical Advisory Council of the Association for FTD. A distinguished finance leader answers our question: When you entered the CFO office for the first time, what’s the one piece of advice you wish someone had given you? Dickerson: As far as leadership goes, I keep coming back to self-awareness. Where are you going to add value in the organization and where are you not? Build around those to balance out the competencies you need in your group to be successful. The thought here is that weaknesses are not necessarily a bad thing, and the biggest strength is understanding what they are and building the right competencies and the right attributes around yourself so that you have the right balance around your team to be successful overall. I also think that patience is very important. Patience to learn and develop. Put the time and energy into developing your skillset so that when you do become a CFO, you’re ready for it. Too often today, I think, people want to jump that learning curve a little bit, and they are very focused on taking on as much responsibility as possible. I’ve seen too many examples of people who have moved up the learning curve too quickly, and they didn’t appreciate the time required to develop and learn.”
