Vince Minjares on Developing Better Youth Coaches

Vincent Minjares recently joined Harbour Basketball as their new High Performance Manager.  A PhD student in Coaching &amp; Pedagogy at AUT University, Vince is an expert in athlete learning who oversees Harbour’s coaching and talent development. Vince has guest lectured across New Zealand and coached with national teams for Basketball New Zealand. Vince previously directed support programmes for scholarship athletes at the University of California, Berkeley in the USA. Vince regularly speaks on topics related to athlete welfare and identity, decision-making, skill learning, lifespan psychology, optimal experiences in sport, and the role of sport in society. In this episode we yarn about topics such as flow states, how social media influences our outlook on life, how we could view sports from a different perspective, and much more.

Today I’m talking with Vincent Minjares. He’s a youth basketball coach, as well as a PhD student at AUT University investigating athlete learning and development through sport. And in my opinion, one of the most interesting guys in the business. On the show, we cover all sorts, from what Vince thinks youth sport is for, to his coaching philosophy, and why he came to New Zealand to study it. We chat about the messiness of coaching and why Vince thinks it’s such a beautiful thing, and how professional sport in influencing young lives.
