The Album: Prince: Purple Rain (1984) I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray. But when I woke up this morning and realized that Oliver and I spent an hour or so talking with Meshell N'degecello about Prince's seminal "Purple Rain" album, I was beside myself with hype. We spoke about the album's forward thinking musicianship and arrangements, Prince as a visionary, his Messiah-like presence and the extended version of Computer Blue. She told us about keeping "I Would Die 4 U" on elevated decibels and repeat and the pure dopeness of "When Doves Cry". We all revisited the moment we first experience Purple Rain. Meshell Nedegeocello's (Mee-shell N-deh-gay-o-chel-o.) records, nine to date, have offered lyrical ruminations on race, love, sex, betrayal, God, and power.  She has been nominated for 10 Grammys. Meshell was the first woman to be featured on the cover of Bass Player magazine. Her music has been featured in a number of film soundtracks including How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Lost &amp; Delirious, Batman &amp; Robin, Love Jones, Love &amp; Basketball, Talk To Me, Tyler Perry's Daddy's Little Girls,The Best Man, Higher Learning, Down in the Delta, The Hurricane, and Soul Men. Meshell Ndegeocello's new album Pour une âme Souveraine (For a Sovereign Soul), A Dedication to Nina Simone comes out on October 9th. After only ten days in the studios of guitarist Pete Min, this album was born, reflecting Meshell's admiration for the pioneering work of an artist who refused to be owned by genre, industry, or expectation. Guests on the album include Sinead O'Connor, Lizz Wright, Valerie June, Tracy Wannomae, Toshi Reagon and Cody ChesnuTT. Meshell turns over singing duties to soul singer Cody ChestnuTT in this pared down cover of Nina Simone's "Young, Gifted and Black."
