Artist Nathalie Kalbach is from Germany but has lived in the U.S. for 13 years. She’s a painter with a favorite subject of old buildings. Nathalie researches the building, its history, and who may have lived or worked there. This research affects her color and design choices. She also uses an art journal, to test out ideas, try new techniques, and play. Nathalie also teaches online workshops, and has put together the group of online videos called Creative Jumpstart. For this year’s Jumpstart, she has 38 artists who have shared a technique or project that you can do to jumpstart your year. Nathalie is also the author of the book Artful Adventures in Mixed Media. Nathalie has taught workshops all over the world, and creates products for the craft industry. I first heard of Nathalie because of a product I bought that she is the mastermind behind, called Creative JumpStart. It is a video series during the month of January where she coordinates artists, products, and a theme for the ENTIRE month. It serves as a creative inspiration and for me has showed me new artists and new processes of making art. I have purchased it every year since them and LOVED every minute of January because of it. Nathalie started off her career as a paralegal. Yes, that's right, you did not mis-read, yes a paralegal at a law firm. Nathalie and I will talk about why she chose that path and how she left that career, trusted her gut and pursued her passion of art. She is a successful entrepreneur because she has been able to diversify her income streams and never have to stop creating. She regularly takes on different challenges and that is just one of the things that inspires me about Nathalie. Follow Your Gut with Nathalie Kalbach

Today’s podcast is about team teaching and features a conversation with Nathalie Kalbach.  Nathalie is a self-taught mixed media artist.  She was born in Germany and lived most of her adult life in Hamburg before moving to the United States in September 2013. She now lives in Jersey City, NJ.   “For the last decade I have been exploring the possibilities of creating dimension and texture by layering different materials and paint media. I have worked in art journals and on canvas, incorporating collage and found objects.   For me, creating art is a dialogue between my skills and the supplies I use. It is not so much a battle as an ongoing attempt to work out the connections between ideas and techniques.   In my mixed media canvases I emphasize urban subject matter, especially gentrification. I depict the vibrancy as well as the decay that I see in the cities around me from multiple viewpoints, represented by layering and tactile dimension.” On the podcast we discuss the more than decade long friendship Nathalie and I share…       …and some thoughts on the benefits of team teaching, as that’s what we’ll be doing at the beginning of next month.
