Vaseem Khan – Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award 2023 Longlist Interview

Coming in 4th on our Review Season 2022 recommendations, 'The Dying Day' is a master class in puzzle construction, containing within its leaves the most devilish historical maze that I’ve had the pleasure of solving this year. As I was the rookie when we covered the book early on this year I was able to grab it by the proverbial horns and indulge in Vaseem Khan’s love of historical trivia, brain-teasers, and Indian architecture. We once again find ourselves swept up in the arms of Bombay, modernly known as Mumbai, where we follow the footsteps of Persis Wadia, a police detective stationed at the much maligned Malabar House, where all of the problem children of the police force are sent to wile away their days with bit cases and one false move will send all of their careers careening off a cliff.

Vaseem Khan--Author and Podcast Host

Vaseem Khan is the author of two award-winning crime series set in India, the Baby Ganesh Agency series set in modern Mumbai, and the Malabar House historical crime novels set in 1950s Bombay. His first book, The Unexpected Inheritance of Inspector Chopra, was selected by the Sunday Times as one of the 40 best crime novels published 2015-2020, and is translated into 16 languages. The second in the series won the Shamus Award in the US. In 2018, he was awarded the Eastern Eye Arts, Culture and Theatre Award for Literature. Vaseem was born in England, but spent a decade working in India. In 2021, Midnight at Malabar House won the Crime Writers Association Historical Dagger, the world’s premier award for historical crime fiction. The second in the series won the Shamus Award in the US. In 2018, he was awarded the Eastern Eye Arts, Culture and Theatre Award for Literature. Vaseem was born in England, but spent a decade working in India.
