March is National Kidney Month. According to the National Institute for Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease 30 million people in the United States are living with a diagnosis of chronic kidney disease. 660,000 American have renal failure with 470,000 patients on dialysis. 190,000 people live with a kidney transplant. Each year chronic kidney disease kills up to 50,000 Americans, more than either breast or prostate cancer. High blood pressure and diabetes are the two leading causes of chronic kidney disease.  kidney disease in its early stages is silent and has no symptoms. For this episode, I am going to the very periphery of the field of Urology, a surgical specialty, and into the field of Nephrology, to talk a little bit about how your kidneys work, so you can understand if you are at risk or have evidence of chronic kidney disease. Your Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) represents the total filtering capacity of millions of tiny filters, each one called a glomerulus.  March is National Kidney Month. Protect your glomeruli.
