Melissa Klapper, author of Jewish Girls Coming of Age in America, 1860-1920, joins Dan Libenson and Lex Rofeberg for a conversation serving as a "prequel" of sorts to our recent unit on the past, present, and future of Bat Mitzvah (and B Mitzvah in general). But it's also...kind-of a sequel? Klapper talks through the ways in which Jewish girls marked their entry into adulthood -- both within Jewish life and in secular contexts -- in the era directly preceding the emergence of Bat Mitzvah as a life-cycle ritual (hence "prequel!"). Episode 384: Before Bat Mitzvah -- A Prequel - Melissa Klapper

The Oral History of Religious Minority Collection preserves Goucher College's history ofreligious diversity and inclusion. Inspired by the growing diversity on campus and concernedwith the intensifying social divides outside its walls, the Office of Religious and Spiritual Lifebegan collecting stories of Goucher alumnae/i in 2019. These oral histories, conducted bycurrent Goucher students, are a contribution to the greater history and cultural artifacts ofGoucher College and they stand as a living legacy of resilience and interfaith connection, asource of empowerment for all minorities on campus, and a starting point for interfaith dialogue.

Melissa R. Klapper '95, professor of history and director of women's and gender studies at Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ, speeks at Goucher College in an event sponsored by the Friends of the Goucher College Library; the Peace Studies Program; the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department; the History Department; and Goucher Hillel. Melissa discusses her most recent book, Ballots, Babies, and Banners of Peace: American Jewish Women's Activism, 1890-1940, and traces the role of Jewish women in birth control, suffrage, and peace movements in the United States.
