Spanish artist Antoni  Muntadas talks about how language and the social body figure into the  multi-media conceptual art projects he's been producing since the 1970s.Living and working in New York and Barcelona, Spanish artist Muntadas talks about the importance of language and the social body in the  multi-media work he's been creating globally since the 1970s. The Digital Oblivion. Substanz und Ethik in der Konservierung digitaler Medienkunst | Symposium Do, 04.11.2010 – Fr, 05.11.2010 Antoni Muntadas began his talk by observing that we should destroy more artworks. Not every artwork deserved to be maintained and some artworks, such as performances, do not have to be reproduced – it is enough that they are documented. Among numerous examples, he pointed to his work »Between the Frames« (1983-1993) – it was only the concept of this artwork that he gave to various curators to re-interpret. Only software was actually handed over; any remaining elements of an installation were manufactured or constructed on the spot. In each individual exhibition of the work, the artwork looked completely different, just as he, the artist, had intended. Ultimately, only the artist’s concept remains. Antoni Muntadas was born in Barcelona in 1942 and has lived in New York since 1971. His work addresses social, political and communication issues, the relationship between public and private space within social frameworks, as well as channels of information and the ways they may be used to censor central information or promulgate ideas. He works on projects in different media such as photography, video, publications, Internet and multi-media installations. /// Antoni Muntadas beginnt mit einer Anknüpfung an verschiedene thematisch relevante Begrifflichkeiten wie »Impermanenz« und »Temporalität“«, die bereits in den 1970er Jahren viel diskutiert wurden. Davon ausgehend beschäftigt er sich mit dem Begriff der »Dokumentation«, der ebenfalls in dieser Zeit aufkam. Interessant erscheint ihm in diesem Kontext, inwiefern die »Dokumentation« letztlich das eigentliche Kunstwerk ersetzt. Die Dokumentation schafft ein »Image«, welches dazu dient, das Werk später zu »erinnern«. Ein weiteres Thema seines Vortrags ist der konservatorische Umgang mit Medienkunst. Während Museen darauf ausgerichtet sind, Malerei und Fotografie zu bewahren, fehlt es im Bereich der Medienkunst an Erfahrung. Im weiteren Verlauf stellt Muntadas die Forderung auf, dass sich die Museen den Prozess des Kunstschaffens aufrechterhalten sollten, auch wenn ihre primäre Aufgabe im Bewahren von Kunst besteht. Außerdem spricht er sich dafür aus, nur bestimmte ausgewählte Werke für die Nachwelt zu erhalten. Abschließend präsentiert der Künstler sein Werk »The File Room«, welches in Form einer Internetdokumentation existiert. Antoni Muntadas wurde 1942 in Barcelona geboren und lebt seit 1971 in New York. In seinen Arbeiten setzt er sich mit der Beziehung zwischen privatem und öffentlichem Raum innerhalb gesellschaftlicher Systeme auseinander.
