Matt Hauck was once a high school athlete who was curious about how he can improve his performance. This thirst for knowledge drove him to become a collegiate athlete and began his career in sports science while he was studying. Later, Matt graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science, Cum Laude at Western Oregon University, and a Master of Science degree in Exercise and Sports Science, Magna Cum Laude at Oregon State University. Matt joins me today to share his insights on sports science and load management in professional soccer. He defines the meaning of sports science and illustrates the daily responsibilities of a sports science coordinator. He shares his insights on the future of sports science and underscores the importance of “invisible monitoring.” He also highlights the power of building relationships as a sports coordinator as well as explains why he emphasizes the ‘sports’ part of sports science. Matt Hauck on Sports Science and Load Management in Professional Soccer

Matt Hauck holds a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Western Oregon University and a master of science in exercise and sport science from Oregon State University. Additionally, Matt is a certified strength and conditioning specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Prior to joining the Timbers, Matt spent one year (2016) working as the sport science research director for Falcon Pursuit. Matt has also served as the sport science coordinator and graduate strength coach for Oregon State University’s football program, while also working as the instructor of exercise and sport science in two years (2013-15) with Oregon State University. Today Matt and I talk about his role as a sports scientist with the Portland Timbers of the MLS.  We review practical advice on monitoring performance metrics for recreational athlete, for an entire sports team, and for fitness professionals and their clients.  Matt has some encouraging remarks regarding the future of technology in sports.  We also get to discussing injury prevention or better yet injury mitigation and how data can help determine readiness.  Matt is a great guy who really understands the practical side of technology and data in sports.  I hope you enjoy the discussion.
