Today, we’re going to have some great conversations with our guest, Emily Shaffer, who is a Software Developer for Google working on Git, which is an open source project.  Emily fills us in on Git’s governance, deadnaming, submodules, Git Hooks, and GitGitGadget.  We also learn more about a tutorial she wrote for people who are trying to learn how to contribute, called My First Contribution, we learn what her day to day experience looks like, and what she’s most excited about happening in the next year in Git. Maine Craft Weekend falls on the first weekend Saturday and Sunday in October and offers an opportunity for the public to explore the life and work of craft artists and businesses in Maine, and for artists to connect with craft enthusiasts, collectors, and visitors behind-the-scenes. This is an educational, community-oriented, and family-friendly event for all!Typically the event is in partnership with Maine Made, and scheduled in conjunction with American Craft Week, a nationwide event promoting craft events each October. In 2019, Maine Craft Weekend received a Star Award from American Craft Week for Outstanding Legacy of Craft Education &amp; Demonstrations. The organization launches a database filled with makers who will partake in the event that is hosted on their website and share what they will be doing for the event.This year the event will be treated as a DIY event and the organization will be promoting what others will be doing through their social media. In the fifth episode of Perceived Value host Sarah Rachel Brown sits down with contemporary jeweler Emily Shaffer. This past August Emily applied for the Halstead Grant and placed as a Top Five Finalist. Halstead is a full service jewelry supply firm that was launched in 1973 and is still family owned and operated. As a company Halstead strives to support small business and emerging artists; most notably through their annual Halstead Grant. Each year one artist is selected as the winner and ten other artists are announced as either Top Five Finalists or Top Ten Finalists. Sarah sits down with Emily to discuss what the Halstead Grant is, what the application entails, and what one can gain beyond the monetary awards.  Originally from Pennsylvania, Emily received her B.F.A and B.S. from Kutztown University in 2014. Going to school within short distances of New York City and Philadelphia exposed her to contemporary art and fashion. Post graduation, she moved to Maine for a one year internship with practicing studio jeweler, Cara Romano. She since has made a home in Maine to begin her career creating wearable, contemporary jewelry. Living in rural Maine inspires her sense of resourcefulness and independence, and a constant drive to create.
