This week on Transmissions, a post-punk roundtable with Mark Stewart of The Pop Group, Stephen Mallinder of Cabaret Voltaire, Eric Random (The Buzzcocks, Nico). On Mark’s latest album, VS, they team up for “Cast No Shadow,” which was made in response to the Simon Reynolds book Rip It Up and Start Again: Postpunk 1978–1984, and Nikolaos Katranis, Russell Craig Richardson, and Academy-award winner Leon Gast’s forthcoming documentary of the same name. How did post-punk hit their respective places? What role did regionalism play in the music’s development? Stephen Mallinder is a founder member of pioneering electronic act Cabaret Voltaire, who are regarded as one of the key influences on contemporary electronic and popular music culture. Stephen has recorded and toured extensively in Europe, USA, Japan and Australia. He continues to record and tour as part of Wrangler, alongside other recent releases under other names Creep Show, Hey Rube, Kula, and Cobby &amp; Mallinder. He has collaborated with a host of artists and musicians including Afrika Bambaataa, Marshall Jefferson, Adrian Sherwood and worked with poet John Giorno and with William Burroughs at the Final Academy in the 1980s. As an academic he has published a number of peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters and holds a PhD in popular culture. He is currently at the University of Brighton teaching on various arts and humanities courses and managing projects in the arts. In addition he does key notes, panels and guest lectures at a number of universities in the UK and conferences around the world.

Stephen Mallinder (AKA Mal from the Cabs in my memory) is a multifaceted artist and musician who was a founding member of the most seminal pre and post punk band Cabaret Voltaire, who went on to work as Sassi &amp; Loco, the Ku-Ling Bros., Hey! Rube, Wrangler and Creep Show. He is also one of Martyn’s oldest and best friends, without whose support, mentorship and inspiration, the nascent Human League would never have developed fully. He has produced in excess of 30 albums, and he is also a well-known remixer and live performer. He  is also a respected academic, having published numerous academic papers, and has a PhD in Music. He is super-smart, authentic and funny, in fact everything you’d wish from a true renaissance man… Ladies and gentleman… I give you a true original – Stephen Mallinder
