Jenn Cristy and I chat about what she learned from touring and recording with John Mellencamp, building a successful music career in the Midwest, and starting 1Pulse Entertainment. Now on her fifth album, Jenn began her career with John Mellencamp, meeting the Hoosier rocker in Bloomington, Indiana, where she was in the midst of an all-American swimming career at Indiana University. During her stint with Mellencamp’s band she proved her versatility, playing flute, piano, percussion, organ, and violin in addition to singing. When she embarked on her solo career in 2003, she wanted to create a sound that both honored all of her varied influences – from Ben Folds to Pink and Bruce Hornsby to Queen – while creating something decidedly original. It is clear that her music has found a hungry audience. Cristy has played around the country, sharing the stage with a veritable who's-who of artists – Shawn Mullins, John Eddie, Antigone Rising, Indigenous, Bree Sharp, Jeffery Gaines, Danielia Cotton and Michael Gabliki (Rusted Root) –or dominating it herself. Her songs have earned praise everywhere from blogs and small-town newspapers to The New York Times. It's nice that after seven years, some of these shows can still surprise me.  Take this one ... please.  Yes, the soothing presence of Jenn Cristy is long absent from the show ... not sure why ... I'll fix that, promise.  Andrew Newport, aka the funny BoTo, is responsible for at least one lost weekend at some bar called "Show Me's" that it turns out was NOT what I thought it was.  Jeremy was one of the first artists I interviewed and friends I made doing this show, so I'm always thrilled to get to hang out with him.  Getting a live acoustic set from Jeremy, along with Jon Martin (whom I have long admired but have never gotten to sit down and get deep with), was just plain huge for me. The icing on that triple-layer cake was having Lee and Brian from Swig, one of my new favorite bands, in the co-hosting slot. So, surely, this was a recipe for a great time ... and it was.Until it comes time for editing.  First off, this show was intended as a live promotional presentation for the BoTo/Cristy/Vogt show at the Vogue.  Great show.  Did you catch it?   Since the podcast was always intended to be released after the show, plenty of extra material was recorded so that we could remove the bulk of the "time sensitive" discussion.  That is to say, we drank a lot and rambled on for slightly more than two hours, not counting the 15 minutes of music that needed to be inserted.  So, in the end the editing process nearly drove me insane.  Cut #1 removed bathroom breaks, ummms, ahhhs, long pauses, repetitious babbling, and much of the discussion around the January 18 show.  It came in at just over two hours.  Great, if you're doing a feature length movie.  In podcasting, anything over 59:59 drops your download numbers by a third.  Cut #2 took out retellings of stories from previous podcasts (there were a lot of those) as well as with some great material from Jon Martin where he discussed his history with Sindicato. (Sorry, Jon, putting a fourth band in there, and not playing their music, felt extraneous. Indy In-Tune #031: Jenn Cristy Returns

Yes, please do not panic because I've managed to put out an unprecedented two shows in a row. There are still eight more to go before I'm allowed to lose steam. The fact is, I had to start editing up these things because, owing to the size of a raw audio file and the fact that I back each one up in triplicate, I've managed to fill up just about every hard drive I've got, and quite frankly, can't install "Tiberium Wars" until I get rid of some of these things.This week's guest, Jenn Cristy, is a talented multi-instrumentalist as well as a fantastic singer/songwriter. Many of you will remember her from her appearance on "that Mellencamp guy's" grammy-nominated album, "Cuttin' Heads," as well as it's subsequent international tour. (John, however, is from Seymour, which has been ruled to be outside of the metro area, thus he doesn't qualify to be on "Indianapolis" In-Tune.) Frankly, when I drove down to Bloomington to meet Jenn (Bloomington, by the way, does count -- my show; my rules), I didn't know quite what to expect, but I'm now happy to report that she definitely lives up to her motto: "A lit'l less diva ... a lit'l more rock." As the interview shows, she is in fact, a warm, funny, and very genuine person who I really can't say enough nice things about. So, I suppose I'll just let this week's show speak for itself.As an aside, before I catch flak from the Amy Fishburn fans in the audience, yes, I do refer to Jenn as "our first female guest." Amy's interview was, in fact, recorded a couple weeks after this one, even though it was released first.
