WORT 89.9FM Madison · A Room of One’s Own’s Gretchen Treu talks WisCon 2021 WisCon is the oldest—and often called the world’s leading—feminist science fiction convention, which takes place every year over Memorial Day weekend. They’ll be holding their annual event virtually May 29-30th. It’s an online not-quite-WisCon, including a group video chat space, complete with virtual bar, pool, and sofas. Grethen Treu, is a co-owner of A Room of One’s Own Bookstore. They’re also a longtime WisCon attendee, a member of the convention’s committee, and a presenter at this year’s WisCon and they join Friday Buzz host Jonathan Zarov to talk more about this event. This past summer, when the news from the Mexican-US border was reaching the height of its intolerability, one of the booksellers at A Room of One's Own came to co-owner Gretchen Treu with an idea: a tip jar. More specifically: a tip jar to raise money for RAICES. But what started as a tip jar turned into a NATIONAL fundraising effort...almost overnight. Bookstores as Activist Spaces with Gretchen Treu

In today's episode we had a sit down with Gretchen Treu, one of the owners at A Room of One's Own Bookstore located in Madison, Wisconsin. Gretchen shared details about her bookstore, and the town of Madison. We learned more about the history of A Room of One's Own, how Gretchen got involved, and how it was, and still is, a beacon of light for members of the LGBTQ community. We also talked about the different changes in the book industry she has seen over the years.  Gretchen really dived into diversity and the importance of own voices in literature today - both as a mirror and a window. We also highlighted the significance, and importance for children reading today. She also shared her biggest challenge, and what she loves most about being an independent bookstore owner. We also talked about current reads, her favorite go-to-genre and we even got book recommendations.
