099 | John Goodson | Lessons Learned

John Goodson grew up in North Carolina, Alaska, and Northern California. His dad was a surgeon in the Air Force and John loved airplanes and science fiction. Space 1999, Star Trek, and later Star Wars captured his imagination as a young person and he began building models. He earned a degree in Product Design from North Carolina State. He loved to draw hard surface models and objects and he's always made his own models and props. He got a 1966 Ford Mustang as his first car and it needed some body work. So he went to a bodyshop that was run by a patient of his dad's and learned how to work with all kinds of materials and developed a sense of precision in "making". He and his pal Tony Hudson made their own Empire Strikes Back snowscape with working miniatures in a spare bedroom in his parents house. Some time later, Tony wound up working at ILM and he and John talked on the phone frequently while John was in Design School. He continued to build and develop his skillset making all kinds of models from the starship Enterprise to the EVA pod from 2001. He came out to stay with Tony for a few weeks in California and wound up with a full-time job in the ILM model shop where he worked for the next 31 years. John's credits are beyond impressive and include; Back to the Future 2, Die Hard 2, Star Trek VI, The Rocketeer, Alive, Mission Impossible, Deep Impact, Mission to Mars, Planet of the Apes, Harry Potter, Terminator 3, Star Wars Episodes 1, 2, &amp; 3, Rogue One, and The Mandalorian. Just to name a few... John's enthusiasm, passion for making, and love of problem solving are inspiring. He shares some amazing stories of his experiences, the techniques developed, and solutions found to complex problems on numerous projects. It was an absolute blast talking to John and we could have easily gone on for another couple hours. May be this one will someday get a part 2...

Movie Meltdown - Episode 400 This week we continue our coverage from WonderFest as we sit down with Kim Smith and John Goodson. Both are technical masters who spent years working at LucasFilm's Industrial Light and Magic, and they have logged in many years building physical models as well as transitioning into digital effects as the industry began to change around them.  And while we try to make sense of this vortex of time and mysterious things, we also discuss... Assassin's Creed, Riverdale, fantastic carpet, sculpting, The Rocketeer, finding the hook, a 33-foot Zeppelin, a stormy night shot, if you wanna eat... you better learn something different to do, making farm equipment, painting, Star Wars: Episode III, Michael Fassbender, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, very spooky sets, organically very technical, successful artist, whoa... no apple for you, sneak him on out of being dead, Scar's pretty awesome, I like his big sharky-grin, they want world peace but at the price of free will, an optical illusion going on in the hallway, drawing the animals, Con-Air, there would be ten bombs, weird creative projects, it was just a pile of burnt rubble, Peter Pan, Boeing pattern-makers, 28 foot-long miniatures, tandem bikes on winding twisty roads are not a good idea, the making of Star Trek book, doing research, it made me think, that sort of exploration was ok, Episode III, a very elaborate prototype, everything was being operated by humans, counting door knobs, pyro is sort of non-scientific, finding a squished penny, like the circus, he was a rubber monster guy, getting left and right out of the same side, problem-solving, a three-dimensional skeleton, the dioramas were amazing, on a grander scale... and a cheaper scale, scientific wild-ass guess, Kerosene bombs, I don't know why we were not electrocuted that night, it was awful and a little bit confusing and very disappointing, he smashed a model airplane, the idea of a picture in a frame is very much like a movie and... my mother and the wax fruit.  "And that really made an impression. It scared me, but at the same time, I was totally intrigued by the model spaceship on TV.
