You can't analyze everything in a limited amount of time.Thoroughly understand what you're working with before starting treatment.Quotes:“There's a lot of controversy going on right now, especially because of the CBS News story that came out about the AGGA appliance, which is an Anterior Growth Guidance Appliance. It’s an orthodontic appliance that's trying to move teeth. But what was happening to these cases that are being shown on TV is that the patients’ bone levels, in terms of their alveolar bone, was very likely not assessed before that patient got into treatment. And so, what happens is, you can only move teeth so far because there's an envelope around bone, around the roots, that keeps the teeth stable. If you push those teeth beyond what the capacity of that bone has to handle that, then you can push teeth right out of bone. You can expose roots. You can cause teeth to die. You can cause severe recession. And I can't tell you how many times I see adult patients in my office that have been through some sort of orthodontic treatment in their life, and a lot of times, they have significant bone issues where you're trying to move teeth and that bone is thinner. And you're at a high risk getting into this orthodontic case if you try and move those teeth in that thinner bone.” (5:33—6:42)“What surgically facilitated orthodontics is is that we can utilize our periodontist colleagues a lot in these situations. And if we’re able to diagnose that patient’s bone conditions — or their alveolar phenotype is the fancy word for that — before we start our orthodontic treatment, a lot of times, these patients, we can work together with our periodontists to do bone grafting or soft tissue grafting along with the orthodontic tooth movement. And what ends up happening is a much more stable result. We’re preventing things like recession from happening along the way.” (6:44—7:17)“One of the other big benefits [of surgically facilitated orthodontics] is that teeth move about 50% of the pace faster than they would without utilizing the surgical techniques. And so, a lot of times, patients, especially adult patients who really don't want to be in treatment very long, this becomes a bonus for them because they get in and out of treatment faster. And they're happy because they're not having unforeseen recession. They're not having trouble with their teeth. They’re not having loose teeth that are about to fall out at the end of treatment. But it really all comes back to, we need to be diagnosing at a higher level before we get into these orthodontic cases. And that involves, as a minimum standard of care in orthodontics, utilizing a CBCT. And that is 100% where the profession needs to go.” (7:18—8:07)“Whenever you start diagnosing cases of ortho, there are really four regions that are very important that you need to look at, one of which is the upper anterior bone around the front teeth. Why would that be important? Well, if you're going to move those teeth and flare them, or retract them, or whatever tooth movement that you're going to do, it’s a good idea to know if there's adequate bone to handle that type of move. On the other side, in the lower anterior, that is the highest frequency area to have thin bone. And we know from certain types of growth patterns, especially people with jaw joint issues that have thinner bone in the lower anterior, a lot of times, or open bite cases. And so, if you're trying to correct that bite issue and we don't have great bone, we’re asking for trouble. And so, again, those are two of the most important areas.” (9:44—10:35)“The other areas that are very important are in the back, our posterior teeth. Especially in today’s world where we’re doing a lot of expansion and trying to help expand the maxilla for breathing issues and all of that, if we’re doing an expander that bases off of the teeth and has the potential to tip those teeth or push those teeth out, then we need to know, does that bone in that area have enough thickness to handle that movement as well? And also, if we’re going to expand the maxilla, the mandible has to go with it, and we have to upright those lower teeth. If we don't have great bone around those lower back teeth to upright into, we’re going to see a ton of recession. And very likely, we’re going to see an unstable result.” (10:36—11:21)“Traditionally, in ortho, we've thought of utilizing periodontists and all these surgically facilitated techniques as maybe a little bit of overkill because, ‘Oh my gosh. We’re asking a patient to go do this surgery along with orthodontics. And if all we were telling them was that it might speed up your treatment,’ which, we’ve known that for a long time. That's been since the ‘80s with the Wilcko brothers. Dr. Frost had also pioneered that. In general, that was our only excuse to get someone to go to a periodontist back in the day. And so, a lot of patients would go, ‘Eh, I don't really care that much about that.’ And what would end up happening is that we'd see recession when we thought we weren't going to. So, again, this is where the 3D world and CBCTs have changed how we execute plans, is it allows us to see the enemy before we get in on the treatment plan. If we see that bone has areas of concern, then we should get them to our periodontist before treatment so that they understand, ‘If I do this procedure, I'm going to have less likelihood of having recession and problems later.’ And so, that's really where the 3D world is changing the way that we interdisciplinarily work together, if that's a word. Essentially, it opens up our world.” (11:47—13:03)“If our patients see they’ve got that thinner bone, a lot of times, they ask me, ‘Okay. What do I do? I don't want that recession. I don't want problems with my teeth. I can see how thin that bone is.’ And that's where, again, it opens up the conversation that you need more involved treatment. And patients say yes to that more involved treatment.” (13:04—13:21)“A lot of the older — in any profession, not just ortho — they say, ‘Hey, we've always done it with this set of imaging. Why do we have to move into this?’ And oh, by the way, there's so much fear about a 3D image possibly adding more radiation to the patient . . . And they base a lot of decisions on old material. And what I mean by that is that today’s 3D X-ray machines, cone beam CTs, when we do a light scan on an orthodontic patient, we’re doing less radiation in one 3D image than we are from a panoramic X-ray and a ceph X-ray, which are two-dimensional images. And so, if you're going to sit there and say 3D is overkill because of radiation purposes, I think that that argument is by the wayside, at this point. Again, that's based off of old CT images, which are heavy radiation. Cone beam CT is much different. And so, we have to start changing that narrative that we’re over-irradiating our patients when we have these newer tools to be able to have a much better radiation level for them than what our old images used to provide.” (14:02—15:18)“The way we’ve always done it needs change.” (15:36—15:38)“You can't see joints or airway issues on patients without 3D, in a lot of these cases. And I should clarify that airway issues, especially pharyngeal airway issues, they're visualized. They're not diagnosed on an X-ray. The X-ray is a helpful tool. However, what orthodontics really needs to be is so much more than teeth. Because what puts a patient in our chair and creates malocclusions are airway issues, tongue issues, TMJ issues. And to execute how we correct those, we have to see all of these things. Otherwise, if we overlook them diagnostically, they're going to come back to haunt us. And what's dead will never die. We are going to be chasing and chasing a malocclusion because we didn't get to the root of the problem. We can only see that with imaging. And 2D imaging is not enough anymore.” (15:48—16:43)“When we come out of ortho school, we know that there are certain things that we don't want to stress with tooth movement. One of those is if we have thin tissue. That was always the traditional thought is, ‘Oh, look at the gum tissue,’ because we could see it at the surface. It’s right there in front of us. And so, a lot of times, there are adult patients, and it’s been well-established that a patient needs to be periodontally stable before going into orthodontics. I don't know that everybody who starts orthodontic cases observes that, sometimes, because I've seen a lot of problems after ortho that come up.” (17:22—18:00)“In general, I think every orthodontist and every periodontist out there understand, in common, that there's a risk for periodontal issues when you get into ortho. But we’ve always looked at it as, ‘Is there already recession, or is the gum tissue thin?’ What we need to wrap our heads around is, where is the bone? So, back to playing together, this is where the imaging facilitates conversation. Basically, in my world, we do our diagnostics with our CBCT, MRI, whatever else we do. But with that, I put together a whole presentation that shows those levels of bone to the patient. And then, with my referral to the periodontist, it has those same pictures of...

Because ultimately, this profession gives back to you in so many ways.” (3:47—4:19)“I was tired of not having an answer for something that was commonly coming up in my orthodontic practice as to why patients were relapsing. And what we stumbled upon, or what I feel I stumbled upon, was that most orthodontic patients are there because they’ve got a joint issue, an airway issue, a tongue issue, or minimal other things — it’s not just teeth. And we’ve got to get to the bottom of why that patient is in our chair to understand how we do treatment and how we keep it stable.” (8:07—8:35)“Recognizing joint issues, airway issues before you get into the case helps you navigate those cases and be successful. And ultimately, you also change the lives of your patients. That's the biggest bit, is people come in with problems they don't even know about.” (8:43—8:58)“In ortho school, we tend to cling to old research that basically divorces us from both situations of airway and joints. I go into this in my lecture, but there are some pretty dogmatic thought patterns in orthodontic education that basically says we have nothing to do with joints. And a newer set of research white papers that was done in 2018, 2019 basically said we’re cleared of having to worry about the airway. ‘We don't make it better. We don't make it worse. Why should we care?’ was kind of the consensus of a lot of that paper. What the details were in both of those papers, on the airway side, it really did say we’re involved in this. We need to be screening as soon as we see kids, adults — anybody. We need to be at least screening for patients.” (9:44—10:39)“What lands 90% of patients in my orthodontic chair is an underlying airway issue. If they're a mouth-breather, if they have poor tongue posture because they can't breathe through their nose, if they have tongue thrusting patterns to breathe better, all that stuff, teeth move, and they get out of place. And so, it looks like an ortho issue. Really, it’s an airway issue that's bringing up the secondary problem with the teeth. Same thing with the joints.” (10:57—11:21)“These patients had joint issues before they ever entered our chair. And basically, if we don't recognize or know how to recognize a joint issue and diagnose it properly at the front end of treatment, then that makes the middle and end of treatment a nightmare if that patient starts having symptoms, or if you start spinning your wheels with your orthodontic mechanics trying to correct a bite that’s really uncorrectable with conventional things.” (11:48—12:15)“The joint issues and airway issues, they're a huge part of our world. And we have to recognize them before you get on the case rather than after they become a problem.” (12:17—12:25)“How you can diagnose the airway and joint issues, it all basically comes out of the imaging that you see with the patient. We’ve got to be doing CBCTs. We’ve got to be doing MRIs to be able to see the enemy under the surface. And so, without a CBCT, how do you expect to visualize the airway? How do you expect to visualize deviated septums or turbinates? How do you expect to see the joints and what's going on there at the heart tissue level?” (12:56—13:25)“You can't see soft tissues on a CBCT. You can't see inflammatory things on a CBCT. So, if there are joint concerns with clicks, pops, deviations of the jaw to one side, essentially, we've got to get to the bottom of that. And what we know through decades of research on the joints is that joint issues cause bite problems. And that is the opposite of what you were taught in ortho school, which is that bite problems cause joint issues. So, I think that's the biggest mental leap that we all need to make as orthodontists, is that under-the-surface issues cause the bite problems, whether it be joints or airway, versus the opposite of what we were taught, which is that teeth problems cause joint issues or airway issues. We’ve got to flip our thinking here.” (13:28—14:16)“It’s easy in ortho, especially, to focus on the teeth part and the esthetics. That is 100% our world. We’re good at it. Everyone, as an orthodontist, knows how to move teeth. People who aren't orthodontists know how to move teeth too. But essentially, if you land the plane in the wrong spot regarding the airway and the joints, then basically, what did we do? Did we help that patient from a bigger standpoint than just having a nice cosmetic result, or did we miss an opportunity to do more for that patient?” (15:11—15:45)“If we recognize the issues, we can do a lot, orthodontically, to help. Maxillary expansion is a huge part of our world, orthodontically, that we've known forever that helps with nasal breathing. All of our new technologies in ortho have been allowing us to bring that to a new population of adults.” (15:51—16:11)“Nasal issues are the most common thing I think I see in orthodontics. And patients go, ‘Okay, I'll go see the ENT. They didn't say it’s surgical, so I guess I don't need to do anything. Right?’ I go, ‘No, you still have an issue. And because they're telling you they don't want to do surgery, that doesn't mean you don't have to manage this the rest of your life.’ And so, having that conversation with the patient, they clearly start to own their issue, and then they also start to take it on that they want to be in charge of it. And they know, ‘If I don't do these things, then I can expect that I'm not going to see the maximum benefit that we talked about.’” (22:00—22:36)“A lot of times, if patients still have an underlying airway issue or a tongue issue at the end of treatment, we’re going to see relapse. Because the same thing that got us in the problem in the first place is still present. And no matter how well they wear that retainer, they're probably going to have a tendency towards relapse that shouldn’t be there, and we need to take care of the underlying [issue].” (22:57—23:15)“The straight teeth part is easy. Looking at the big picture and trying to help the big picture is where we can make the biggest difference.” (25:16—25:23)“We can't be in a camp and ignore all the other stuff. I've been to a lot of different CE, and I love learning the different perspectives or the pieces of the puzzle. But I feel like sometimes in those different CE, it becomes easy to go, ‘Well, that's it. That's the answer for all these patients.’ And then, you go to a different one and go, ‘Oh, wow. That sounds amazing too. That sounds like that might be the answer.’ What I've come to see in orthodontics, especially, is that this is the hot garbage fire of all issues of dentistry. Which is, if somebody’s in your ortho chair, they’ve got all of the above going on. And it’s our job to know how much of what is diving into this case.” (27:39—28:23)“We have to look at it all, and we have to be masters of it all. Because if we’re missing one of the fires that's burning, it’s still going to rear back up and cause issues for these patients. So, that's where the imaging side sets us free. Because if you're able to visualize what's going on with your patient, if you're able to do sleep studies or CPC studies at home to see how they're sleeping, that's data. He is dedicated to advancing the profession of orthodontics and dentistry as a whole.Born and raised in Tucson, Arizona, Dr. McDonald’s love of baseball brought him to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he played as a catcher for the Lobos from 2006 to 2008. While attending the University of New Mexico, he met his wife, Emily, a New Mexico native. He also fell in love with the Sandias, green chile, and the near-perfect weather. He graduated from the University of New Mexico in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and a minor in chemistry.Dr. McDonald attended dental school at the prestigious Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. Known for its rigorous academic curriculum and intense clinical training, he received many academic accolades while at Creighton, including inductions into Omicron Kappa Upsilon (National Dental Honor Society) and Alpha Sigma Nu (Honor Society of Jesuit Universities). He also served in leadership positions as class president and student body president, and on alumni relations committees.After graduating cum laude from Creighton, Dr. McDonald was accepted as one of only three residents nationwide into the University of Missouri-Kansas City Orthodontics program, a renowned two-and-a-half-year, full-time residency known for its clinical excellence. He graduated in December of 2016 with his certificate in orthodontics and master’s degree in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences.When away from the office, Dr. McDonald is a “girl-Dad” to two daughters, a self-proclaimed grill master, and minimally talented yet enthusiastic golfer. And we’ve got to get to the bottom of why that patient is in our chair to understand how we do treatment and how we keep it stable.” (8:07—8:35)“Recognizing joint issues, airway issues before you get into the case helps you navigate those cases and be successful. And ultimately, you also change the lives of your patients. That's the biggest bit, is people come in with problems they don't even know about.” (8:43—8:58)“In ortho school, we tend to cling to old research that basically divorces us from both situations of airway and joints. I go into this in my lecture, but there are some pretty dogmatic thought patterns in orthodontic education that basically says we have nothing to do with joints. And a newer set of research white papers that was done in 2018, 2019 basically said we’re cleared of having to worry about the airway. ‘We don't make it better. We don't make it worse. Why should we care?’ was kind of the consensus of a lot of that paper. What the details were in both of those papers, on the airway side, it really did say we’re involved in this. We need to be screening as soon as we see kids, adults — anybody. We need to be at least screening for patients.” (9:44—10:39)“What lands 90% of patients in my orthodontic chair is an underlying airway issue. If they're a mouth-breather, if they have poor tongue posture because they can't breathe through their nose, if they have tongue thrusting patterns to breathe better, all that stuff, teeth move, and they get out of place. And so, it looks like an ortho issue. Really, it’s an airway issue that's bringing up the secondary problem with the teeth. Same thing with the joints.” (10:57—11:21)“These patients had joint issues before they ever entered our chair. And basically, if we don't recognize or know how to recognize a joint issue and diagnose it properly at the front end of treatment, then that makes the middle and end of treatment a nightmare if that patient starts having symptoms, or if you start spinning your wheels with your orthodontic mechanics trying to correct a bite that’s really uncorrectable with conventional things.” (11:48—12:15)“The joint issues and airway issues, they're a huge part of our world. And we have to recognize them before you get on the case rather than after they become a problem.” (12:17—12:25)“How you can diagnose the airway and joint issues, it all basically comes out of the imaging that you see with the patient. We’ve got to be doing CBCTs. We’ve got to be doing MRIs to be able to see the enemy under the surface. And so, without a CBCT, how do you expect to visualize the airway? How do you expect to visualize deviated septums or turbinates? How do you expect to see the joints and what's going on there at the heart tissue level?” (12:56—13:25)“You can't see soft tissues on a CBCT. You can't see inflammatory things on a CBCT. So, if there are joint concerns with clicks, pops, deviations of the jaw to one side, essentially, we've got to get to the bottom of that. And what we know through decades of research on the joints is that joint issues cause bite problems. And that is the opposite of what you were taught in ortho school, which is that bite problems cause joint issues. So, I think that's the biggest mental leap that we all need to make as orthodontists, is that under-the-surface issues cause the bite problems, whether it be joints or airway, versus the opposite of what we were taught, which is that teeth problems cause joint issues or airway issues. We’ve got to flip our thinking here.” (13:28—14:16)“It’s easy in ortho, especially, to focus on the teeth part and the esthetics. That is 100% our world. We’re good at it. Everyone, as an orthodontist, knows how to move teeth. People who aren't orthodontists know how to move teeth too. But essentially, if you land the plane in the wrong spot regarding the airway and the joints, then basically, what did we do? Did we help that patient from a bigger standpoint than just having a nice cosmetic result, or did we miss an opportunity to do more for that patient?” (15:11—15:45)“If we recognize the issues, we can do a lot, orthodontically, to help. Maxillary expansion is a huge part of our world, orthodontically, that we've known forever that helps with nasal breathing. All of our new technologies in ortho have been allowing us to bring that to a new population of adults.” (15:51—16:11)“Nasal issues are the most common thing I think I see in orthodontics. And patients go, ‘Okay, I'll go see the ENT. They didn't say it’s surgical, so I guess I don't need to do anything. Right?’ I go, ‘No, you still have an issue. And because they're telling you they don't want to do surgery, that doesn't mean you don't have to manage this the rest of your life.’ And so, having that conversation with the patient, they clearly start to own their issue, and then they also start to take it on that they want to be in charge of it. And they know, ‘If I don't do these things, then I can expect that I'm not going to see the maximum benefit that we talked about.’” (22:00—22:36)“A lot of times, if patients still have an underlying airway issue or a tongue issue at the end of treatment, we’re going to see relapse. Because the same thing that got us in the problem in the first place is still present. And no matter how well they wear that retainer, they're probably going to have a tendency towards relapse that shouldn’t be there, and we need to take care of the underlying [issue].” (22:57—23:15)“The straight teeth part is easy. Looking at the big picture and trying to help the big picture is where we can make the biggest difference.” (25:16—25:23)“We can't be in a camp and ignore all the other stuff. I've been to a lot of different CE, and I love learning the different perspectives or the pieces of the puzzle. But I feel like sometimes in those different CE, it becomes easy to go, ‘Well, that's it. That's the answer for all these patients.’ And then, you go to a different one and go, ‘Oh, wow. That sounds amazing too. That sounds like that might be the answer.’ What I've come to see in orthodontics, especially, is that this is the hot garbage fire of all issues of dentistry. Which is, if somebody’s in your ortho chair, they’ve got all of the above going on. And it’s our job to know how much of what is diving into this case.” (27:39—28:23)“We have to look at it all, and we have to be masters of it all. Because if we’re missing one of the fires that's burning, it’s still going to rear back up and cause issues for these patients. So, that's where the imaging side sets us free. Because if you're able to visualize what's going on with your patient, if you're able to do sleep studies or CPC studies at home to see how they're sleeping, that's data. If you did your job at the front end and diagnosed and said, ‘Hey, we need to take care of not just the teeth but these issues to keep this stable,’ then you really did your job and you're in the clear as a doctor.” (13:09—13:33)“Right now, in dentistry, the biggest evolving part of this profession is on the imaging side. I think we’re in a huge revolution of how we’re going to do dentistry, where everything is going to be in 3D and people are going to routinely do MRIs, not just TMJ specialists. In my world, I think I'm one of the few orthodontists that do it. But it’s going to be widespread. And honestly, it gives so much value to the patient. We treat them to the highest standard of care possible instead of limiting what we could do.” (15:02—15:35)“I started looking at my 2D X-rays and then looking at the 3D and saying, ‘Well, I can kind of see this on the 2D.’ On a lateral ceph, you can see adenoids. It’s clear as day. You can see tonsils clear as day. So, you don't necessarily have to be totally in the 3D world, at this moment, to be able to start looking for the things that we should be looking for. I mean, on a pano, you can see turbinates clear as day on a lot of patients and see noses really well. And also, the biggest thing, you can see joints. So, just in our every day, what you take as a general dentist, what you take as an orthodontist, those images are still very valuable if you know where to look besides just the pearly white things in this little area right here.” (17:24—18:09)“I started saying, ‘Okay, maybe I should be doing [imaging] on a few more patients,’ because I'm starting to see maybe this is part of their problem. But I was recognizing surface issues like narrow palates and things that then I go, ‘Well, maybe I should see if there's something causing this under the surface.’ And then, at that point, you show the patient, and they go, ‘Yeah, let's follow up on that ENT referral.’ I never thought, as a dentist, I'd be writing as many ENT referrals and chiropractic referrals and TMJ stuff that's never thought of as part of your world, but it certainly is.” (18:15—18:52)“One of the most valuable pieces of having imaging behind it is I could go to the ENTs and say, ‘Hey, here are these pictures of this patient’s nose. This is helpful for you to diagnose and make a plan, and I'm going to send these on every patient that I send you to. Is this helpful, and what do you see?’ And I talked with one ENT, in particular. Initially, they were like, ‘Well, I never routinely had those in front of me on these patients. But now, I see it.’ And so, then the imaging side really did start to open up other people’s eyes as to, ‘Okay. Well, that's not just wishy-washy. That's hard and fast right in front of you with that image. And so, what do we do now?’ Instead of guessing or saying, ‘Let's watch it,’ [it’s] like, ‘Hey, we can see the enemy. Let's go for it.’” (19:54—20:40)“At the end of the day, [imaging] really does open your eyes on the airway front, especially as to the health benefits that we can have for these patients, and that we can really create a better systemic situation for them, not just a teeth situation up here.” (25:53—26:08)“I had to have jaw surgery. I was so Class III, just a classic mouth-breather, tongue-tied patient. And essentially, [when] I was in my 30s and had jaw surgical correction and a nasal septoplasty, I was like, ‘Wow, I can actually breathe through my nose. This is great.’ Ultimately, I lived my whole life like this: I couldn't smell coffee. I couldn't do this, this, and the other. But I didn't know about that. I didn't know I needed septoplasty and things done until I saw it on the CBCT, and I was like, ‘Damn, no wonder I can't breathe.’” (27:08—27:47)“The other big thing, back to the inflammatory side, you don't know how inflamed that joint is until you see it on the MRI. And there are some people you're like, ‘Damn, we’re fighting a forest fire here. There is no way this splint is going to be good for you, or the right kind of matchup. We need to manage this this way before we get into ortho.’ And for some patients, it says, ‘Wow, you really do need a surgical procedure,’ like what Dr. Mark Piper and Brian Shah and everybody pioneered and do. And it changes people’s lives.” (30:17—30:51)“Sadly, I feel like in a lot of ortho right now, there's pushback on imaging that there shouldn't be. And some people get thrown under the bus for taking CBCTs on patients as part of their ortho workup because a lot of people think it’s over-irradiating a patient. And in this day and age, the CBCT machine that I have and the ones that are coming out that you would buy if you're buying a new one, they have less radiation than — I mean, if you take a pano and a ceph on a 2D thing, my CBCT currently has less radiation out of it that I can see joints, airway — everything under the surface on — than those two old images I used to take.” (34:22—35:06)“‘At what level do you feel comfortable going in blind on a case?’ is what I ask those doctors where they're like, ‘Why are you taking the CBCT?’ I'm going, ‘Well, I want to know everything about this patient. I want to know what's going to screw up my nice result. I want to know what I need to be encompassing with my treatment. And ultimately, I want to show the patient too. So, can you get that off your pano and lateral ceph? If you can, good for you. But I need this level to be able to operate at the standard of care I want to provide.’” (35:08—35:41)“One of the biggest, most important things I think we all need to embrace in dentistry, not just ortho, is how much we can be part of such a bigger picture for our patients, and that the imaging under the surface allows us to see those things that we can be a bigger part of. And some people get thrown under the bus for taking CBCTs on patients as part of their ortho workup because a lot of people think it’s over-irradiating a patient. And in this day and age, the CBCT machine that I have and the ones that are coming out that you would buy if you're buying a new one, they have less radiation than — I mean, if you take a pano and a ceph on a 2D thing, my CBCT currently has less radiation out of it that I can see joints, airway — everything under the surface on — than those two old images I used to take.” (34:22—35:06)“‘At what level do you feel comfortable going in blind on a case?’ is what I ask those doctors where they're like, ‘Why are you taking the CBCT?’ I'm going, ‘Well, I want to know everything about this patient. I want to know what's going to screw up my nice result. I want to know what I need to be encompassing with my treatment. And ultimately, I want to show the patient too. So, can you get that off your pano and lateral ceph? If you can, good for you. You have to be able to motivate them. Drew McDonald has a strong lineage when it comes to athletes in his family especially on his mom’s side of the family. It starts with his grandfather Tom Freppon who played basketball at Newport Catholic High School and Xavier University during the late-1950’s and early-1960’s.Tom Freppon had four children and at least four grandchildren that all played college athletics:* Son Tom Jr played basketball at Thomas More* Tom, Jr.’s two daughters Kaela Jo (Xavier/NKU) and Mikah (Lewis) both played college volleyball* Daughter Pam (Wurtz) played volleyball at Western Kenutcky* Daughter Debbie (Zegarra) played volleyball at Midway* Daughter Christie (Drew’s mom) played basketball at NKU* Christie’s daughter (Drew’s sister) Rachel McDonald currently plays volleyball at SIU-EdwardsvilleDrew’s father Jeff McDonald was a tennis player at Northern Kentucky.Young Drew McDonald didn’t get toys from Santa Claus as a youngster, instead he was left sports equipment under the tree each Christmas morning.Growing up Drew was a fixture in the basketball gym. While his mom Christie coached the girls basketball team at Newport Central Catholic he started as a water boy, became a team manager and eventually a practice player all before he was in high school.He followed his family by attending Newport Central Catholic High School and playing basketball for head coaches Grant Brannen and Hall of Famer Ron Dawn. During his time on “The Hill” Drew’s teams won three All-A Classic state tournament championships.Like his parents, Drew signed to play basketball at Northern Kentucky University. He committed to Norse head coach Dave Bezold but he was let go before Drew’s senior season.NKU hired another New Cath alum, and older brother of his high school coach, John Brannen. Brannen reassures Drew that he wants to build the program with Drew as a key contributor.After a tough freshman season where the Norse only win nine games, NKU puts together a dream season in 2016-17. The team becomes just the second team to advance to the NCAA tournament in its first season of eligibility since 1970.Drew talks about the unlikely Horizon League tournament championship run and playing Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament.In 2018, NKU had an incredible run where they won 17 home games on its way to the Horizon League regular season championship.
