Sharing their Minnesota Story is Business Legend Garwin McNeilus. In this special edition, we sat down in front of a LIVE audience and heard from Garwin on how he used his entrepreneurial skills to start and build McNeilus Truck and Manufacturing and how he has used the empire he built to help make the world a better place. Here is his story.

This week on the podcast we listen in to a “Business Legends LIVE” recording hosted by Sterling State Bank and the Collider Foundation from Entrepreneurship Week 2019! This series was launched with local entrepreneur and business legend Garwin McNeilus, founder of McNeilus Truck &amp; Manufacturing. Garwin started this business in Dodge Center, Minnesota in 1970 and eventually became the largest manufacturer of concrete mixers and refuse packers in the world.On the podcast today we talk about:·       Garwin’s childhood, including his move to the Dodge Center area and early exposure to entrepreneurship through “junking” with his dad and contracting odd jobs during high school.·       How he broke into the concrete business with Rochester Ready Mix working as a construction worker, truck driver, and finally as a bookkeeper.·       His desire to run his own business, which caused Garwin to open his own ready mix plant in Dodge Center in 1964.·       Garwin’s launch into the concrete mixer business, where he began buying and selling used trucks. He later transitioned into building truck parts, purchasing and selling new trucks, and eventually started his own truck manufacturing business. ·       His exit from McNeilus Truck &amp; Manufacturing.·       Garwin’s charity work, including his wind farm “retirement” project, which he uses to fund orphanages and schools for disadvantaged children.·       His advice for emerging entrepreneurs.
