How do synthetic cannabinoids compare to naturally occurring ones??This week we’re joined by pharmacologist Dr Saoirse O'Sullivan and pharmacist Dr Andy Yates, experienced cannabis scientists and advisors to Artelo Biosciences.In this episode we take an in-depth look into cannabinoids, exploring the three classes - endocannabinoids, phytocannabinoids and synthetic cannabinoids in detail, alongside the uses, benefits and limitations of each type.→ View full show notes, summary, and access resources here: https://www.canverse.global/shownotes/e106About Dr Saoirse O'Sullivan, Ph.DProfessor Saoirse Elizabeth O’Sullivan received her doctorate from Trinity College Dublin in 2001 and moved to the University of Nottingham in 2002 as a Research fellow where she began researching cannabinoid pharmacology through basic and clinical research.  She was made Lecturer in 2007, Associate Professor in 2011 and Full Professor in 2019.  She has nearly 50 peer-reviewed articles and 3 books chapters on the topic of cannabinoid pharmacology dating back to 2004.  Her specific interests are on the therapeutic potential of cannabis-based medicines in cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and inflammatory bowel disease.  Her research methodologies span from cellular and animal models, to human healthy volunteer studies, systematic reviews and early phase clinical trials.  In 2016, she was named the International Cannabinoid Research Society Young Investigator of the Year.  In 2017, Saoirse set up an independent consulting company called CanPharmaConsulting Ltd, and through this, acts as scientific advisor to companies like Artelo Biosciences, CBDScience Group, Therapix Biosciences and Dragonfly Biosciences, helping to turn cannabinoid science into new medicines. She also develops educational tools around the use of cannabis-based medicines for higher learning institutes. She is a long-standing member of, and general secretary to, the International Cannabinoid Research Society. She works with charities, patient groups, healthcare professionals to educate on the benefits of cannabis-based medicines.  Saoirse has worked with the BBC and is an expert witness for the police.About Dr. Andy Yates, Ph.DDr. Andy Yates has more than 15 years experience in the pharmaceutical industry including 10 years as an executive at AstraZeneca. He held key roles within the medical affairs, commercial, business development and strategy functions for AstraZeneca’s in-line and development portfolio. Dr Yates has been extensively involved in the life-cycle management of key multi-billion dollar products leading to the funding and initiation of significant development programmes. Whilst in business development he led evaluations and transactions that resulted in multiple collaborative agreements with academia, biotechnology and peer pharma. Gregory D. Gorgas, President and  CEO, explains what pharmaceuticals his company is developing to work with the body's  endocannabinoid system.  He touches on  How our  endocannabinoid system was discovered and how it works, The ways Artelo Biosciences approaches the development of pharmaceuticals, and What three products they are currently working toward releasing.  Mr. Gorgas begins with how Dr. Raphael Mechoulam  discovered our  endocannabinoid system in Israel as he researched the effects of cannabis, trying to pinpoint what receptors it targeted. This allowed him to identify several receptors in our body, discovering this powerful system. Mr. Gorgas explains that the body makes chemicals that target these receptors and the cannabis plant mimics what the body already makes. He then discusses why his company is working on pharmaceuticals to address this system. He says that it's a powerful communication system throughout the body and handles responses to inflammation, stress, and any stimulus which the body would want to address. When the body is overwhelmed, introducing a chemical from outside the body may help this system.  He then explains the three ways Artelo Biosciences is trying to target this system through pharmaceuticals: First, a naturally-occurring cannabinoid that's been altered to increase appetite yet avoid the euphoria or high state as a treatment for cancer patients; second, a cannabinoid called EBD with anti-anxiety and anti-inflammatory properties; and third, a fatty-acid binding protein-5 inhibitor originally researched as a cancer treatment.
