In our second disability employment success story for National Disability Employment Awareness Month 2022, meet Candis Welch. A lifelong resident of Los Angeles, California with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, she began her career as an Executive Assistant with Issa Rae Productions after graduating with a degree in Journalism. She then pivoted to the public sector, eventually becoming a Procurement Analyst for the Los Angeles Homeless Service Authority (LAHSA) and now works in her current position as LAHSA's internal DEI Coordinator.   — Visit Candis' site — Follow Candis on IG

Life After Paralysis Disability Employment Series 2022 - Candis Welch, DEI Practioner, Disability Advocate & Speaker

Are you making excuses or are you making it happen? Are you willing to break so that you can rebuild yourself to be even stronger? At 18 months, Candis Welch was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Despite the early predictions on her life, Candis is now a 32 year-old college graduate that holds a Master's Degree in Public Administration, has been Issa Rae's assistant for 5 years, and works for the Los Angeles Homeless Service Authority - all from her wheelchair.  Although Candis experiences everyday adversities dealing with her disability, she lives a FULL LIFE! Candis chooses to persevere and prove people’s stereotypes wrong, wishing to set an example and provide hope for others in her situation. On her blog, 'Can Can on Wheelz', she chronicles daily life from her perspective. Candis opens up about some of the challenges she's faced along her #dreamdriving journey and why she is so committed to improving herself, remaining strong, changing the perception of those that are disabled and/or using mobility devices and being an advocate for others living with disabilities that deserve to live life just as anyone else would. 179: Finding Strength To Keep Going Despite Challenges w/ Candis Welch

You are in for a treat with today's guest! The powerhouse and right hand girl/executive assistant of Issa Rae is Candis Welch of CanCan On Wheelz, a blog that highlights her life as she navigates life being disabled. She was born with spinal muscular atrophy, a disease that robs people of physical strength by affecting the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord, taking away the ability to walk, eat, or breathe. It is the number one genetic cause of death for infants. Candis was told that she would not make it pass 12 years old and is a two-time suicide survivor.Not only did she defy the odds, she is thriving in all of her black girl magic and refuses to be defined as disabled. She says she is differently-abled and is proof that our limitations only exists in our mind. Can she get anymore magical? Yes, she is an unicorn lol.
