Of all the cooking essentials we buy and consume, few are as taken for granted or even misrepresented as extra virgin olive oil. Imagine you’re in France scanning the shelves in your local market for a new bottle. The labels might lead you to believe the oil is 100% French, Italian or Greek but inspect the fine print and a fuller picture emerges: Pressed in Italy, Produced Outside of the European Union. And that’s if the bottles specify that distinction at all. But if I learned anything from reporting a story for Afar Magazine about today’s guest, it’s just how much of the olive oil that’s exported in the world is from another country and another region entirely. Tunisia is the world’s 3rd largest exporter and the 1st outside of the E.U. and yet most people would be surprised to know this. 115: On Tunisian olive oil as a form of resistance with Kaïa's Sarah Ben Romdane 

Cette semaine, je suis ravie de partager ma conversation avec Sarah Ben Romdane, oléicultrice et fondatrice de la marque Kaia.  Après des études de journalisme, Sarah rejoint le média « Mille World » au sein duquel elle exercera pendant trois ans. Lorsque le monde est subitement frappé par la pandémie, sa routine se retrouve soudainement chamboulée et les premières interrogations apparaissent. Sarah n’avait jusque-là jamais vraiment songé à radicalement changer de vie et se reconnecter à la terre de ses ancêtres. Mais une évidence va finalement l’inciter à créer son entreprise et sa marque d’huile d’olive Kaia.   Dans cet épisode, Sarah retrace son enfance heureuse entre la France, l’Angleterre, la Tunisie et la Syrie. Elle évoque son rapport aux identités multiples et comment celles-ci étaient perçues d’un pays à l’autre.   Elle revient également sur ses premiers pas de journaliste et sa transition professionnelle. Elle évoque d’abord cette évidence qui l’a encouragé à reprendre le métier que ses aïeux exerçaient au 19ème siècle puis son retour en Tunisie synonyme de découverte du monde entrepreneurial et agricole.   Enfin Sarah nous explique pourquoi la Tunisie qui est l'un des principaux producteurs mondiaux d’huile d’olive est si peu reconnue dans ce domaine. Sarah Ben Romdane est la fondatrice de KAÏA, une huile d'olive certifiée Bio produite en circuit court à partir d'olives monovariétales récoltées à la main sur la propriété familiale de cinquième génération.Avant de lancer KAÏA au printemps 2021, Sarah était membre fondatrice de Mille, un média digital consacré à la culture millennial et Gen Z du monde arabe.Diplomée à Londres de sciences politiques et de journalisme, Sarah a toujours cherché des moyens de faire le pont entre son identité franco-arabe et son travail. C'est son engagement pour la justice sociale et sa passion pour raconter des histoires qui animent sa vision. Elle a aujourd'hui pour mission de construire la marque d'huile d'olive tunisienne de terroir la plus influente, tout en promouvant la diversité, la durabilité et l'intégrité culturelle.
