108: “Don’t Let Your Light Frighten You” with Jessica DeCastro Today we chat with Author Jessica DeCastro. Jessica is a newly published author, with her first publication - Heroin's Child - in The Great Canadian Woman anthology. She was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, but has lived 20 minutes away in the suburb of Mississauga for the past 7 years. She is the biggest fan of the city of Toronto, embracing the beautiful diversity, endless opportunities and eccentric characteristics that make the city so special. Her current interests range from people and business development, to environmentalism and sustainability. It is important to her that she creates a positive impact on the future of her community and empowers others to do the same. She also loves the performing arts, travelling, and spending time with her family. Growing up with a mother who was an addict, prostitute, and criminal, Jessica choose to be different. Instead of allowing her mother’s choices to be hers, she consciously separated herself from the expectations of others. She was determined to show them what she was capable of and that she could be her own person and create her own life aside from what was set up for her. In this episode we talk about: 1.  Regardless of your life circumstances, it is important to learn to let go of the victim mentality as this will only keep you stuck. 2. Don’t let your darkness, or your story direct your life. It is your light that can guide you in your life. The Marianne Williamson quote has been a guiding quote in Jessica’s life. “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” 3.  Guilt is an incredibly heavy emotion and it can stop your growth in all areas of your life.  Learning what is your responsibility to carry can help put guilt into perspective.  It is worth doing the work to learn to release it. 4.  Addiction impacts families, not just the person affected by the addictions, it is truly a family disease. 5.  What we don’t process, or work to heal, will stay with us in our lives and impact us in potentially non-productive ways. 6.  All change is possible when we commit to doing the work, own our stories and own our choices.
