In this week’s episode of Body Wisdom, Dr. Michele Summers Colon interviews Dr. Raynette Ilg. Dr. Raynette Ilg, known as Dr. Ray, is the owner of Olive Branch Wellness Center located in South Elgin Illinois. She also has a practice in Peoria. She is a naturopath who graduated from National University of Health Sciences in Lombard Illinois, where she received her doctorate of naturopathic medicine after she accomplished her bachelors of biological medicine, and graduated in the top 3 of her class. Dr. Ray is also a lecturer to various healthcare organizations and business’ in the Chicagoland area, as well as to the Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of America. She also teaches other healthcare professionals about the usage of Naturopathy as a means for companion care of ailments.She is also a guest lecturer at Purdue University and works closely with many area psychologists, chiropractors, medical doctors and acupuncturists, instructing them in ways to gain high quality patient healing for optimum results. Dr. Ray is a monthly contributor to several newsletters for various business’ and lectures extensively. She is the international author of "Living La Vida Grande: Why You Can’t Lose Weight" as well as a second book coming out soon titled "Living La Vida Grande: Which Diet Should I Choose?" Dr. Ray resides in Bartlett, Illinois with her husband. She has two grown daughters, Vanessa and Whitney, a perfect granddaughter Jersey Ray, and an amazing grandson, Spud. #33 Naturopathic Medicine and Weight Loss with Dr. Raynette Ilg

In this episode of The Functional Medicine Radio Show, Dr. Carri’s special guest Dr. Raynette Ilg, ND (aka: Dr. Ray) discusses Part 2 of why you can’t lose weight. Dr. Ray explains how finding and addressing the root cause of your weight problem can tip the scales (no pun intended!) in the right direction.  She provides some great tips on uncovering the reasons for why you can’t lose weight, and explains why it’s important to get everything on your ‘insides’ balanced first so your weight can come off second. If you can’t lose weight, despite doing everything right, it’s time to discover what’s out of balance deep inside your body and keeping you from reaching your weight-loss goals. Dr. Ray is a naturopathic doctor, lecturer, and author of the hit book “Livin’ LaVida Grande: Why You Can’t Lose Weight” and has a second book coming out soon titled “Livin’ LaVida Grande: Which Diet Should I Chose”. Main Questions Asked:  Where do food cravings come from? Do cravings mean something specific? How can we deal with cravings? Should we eat organic or regular food? What about using willpower to stop cravings?  Key Points made by Dr. Ray:  Cravings can come from: nutrient deficiencies; boredom; imbalances within the intestines, like too much bad bacteria, yeast overgrowth, or parasites; adrenal exhaustion; food sensitivities; poor sleep patterns; emotional eating; plus there are other factors. We need to rotate through our foods to not only avoid creating food allergies/sensitivities, but also to make sure we’re getting all our nutrients. Cravings can also come from brain imbalances of serotonin and dopamine. Fat free foods and low fat foods mess up the body’s chemistry. Avoiding red meat often leads to deficiencies of iron, B12, and folate. The foods we should eat organic are the Dirty Dozen – those that are the highest in pesticides. Our foods are often deficient in nutrients because they’re shipped from afar and these nutrient deficiencies cause and compound cravings. Eat when you’re hungry. Eat until you’re full. Stopping cravings has nothing to do with willpower – cravings come from imbalances within the body so do not feel shame or guilt about “not having enough willpower”. Once the body is back into balance the cravings will stop.
