After spending most of his life in the Midwest, Ryan Scannura moved to Denver, Colorado where he created the ongoing party, Deep Club. The underground party aimed to highlight some of the finest American dance music talent while providing a safe space for people of all backgrounds and genders. In the last five years, Deep Club hosted artists like The Black Madonna, Mike Huckaby, Honey Soundsystem, D’Marc Cantu, Noncompliant, and many others, while simultaneously working hard to nurture its resident DJs and other local talent. The collective spawned a podcast series and a record label, which claims four 12-inch records. Ryan Scannura from Deep Club joins me this week for some afrobeat and deep house fun. Enjoy.From Ryan:"I spent about a month pulling records before recording this mix. The records range from old classics to brand new. I've been playing more house than usual lately, and this mix is representative of that, although it does cover some techno. Usually when I'm feeling down or current events or politics are gloomy, disco and house makes me feel better. But this mix goes beyond just dance music. I've been studying jazz most of my life, and lately I've been buying more jazz, afrobeat, and tribal house records. For this mix, I wanted to play a large chunk of jazz and afrobeat, so that's how I started. The rest of the mix followed based on the first section. Whether people realize it or not, jazz is at the core of most music that we listen to everyday. It's influence is broad, and it permeates all dance music. However, even deeper engrained in almost all cultures is the beat of a drum. It's something we all recognize. It's as innate to us as spoken language. RYAN SCANNURA (Deep Club)Unlike most of my mixes on the Internet, I recorded this one at home instead of at a party. I didn't plan any of it; I was picking records up off my floor as I went. This was just a few days after the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, and I had been listening to MFSB and Love is the Message a lot, so I put that on first, not even intending on mixing anything after. This spontaneous two-hour vinyl mix ensued.At the time, the floor of my apartment was littered with Detroit house, techno, and electro records that I recently had bought at Submerge and Detroit Threads when I was there for Movement. Lots of UR classics and Detroit house that I found there. Also some stuff still lingering from my recent visits to Gramaphone and Logan Hardware (Chicago) and a few shops in NYC. I think the mix captures my style pretty well, both in terms of selection and presentation. I don't like sticking to any one style of music when I play records. The mix includes deep and jacking house, disco, acid, electro, and techno.       This mix also captures a moment in time -- a time when I was simultaneously feeling down about what had just happened in Orlando and my rather disappointing time in Detroit a few weeks prior; it was my sixth consecutive year going to Detroit during festival weekend, but my first time skipping the festival. I spent a lot of time alone that weekend, and a lot of the music at the parties did not speak to me. It's hard when a lot of your friends are having "the best weekend of the year" and are quite vocal about it, and you're in a completely different headspace.
