She has a proven track record for getting clients recognized as leaders and go-to experts, with over 6 million press impressions under her belt. Her work has been featured in countless newspaper, magazine, TV, and radio stories, and a few books, too.  Melanie began her career in PR working as a newspaper reporter in the early 90s.  It didn't take long before she realized a change was needed.  Shortly after graduating she jumped into the world of high-tech PR as it was the ideal time to be a part of the industry as the internet was just taking off.  Most startups at the time began in garages, so everyone pitched in to make the businesses successful.  During this time she worked with over 6 companies that went on to having successful IPOs. When it comes to PR, the most important rule that must be followed is asking a simple question. What's in it for your audience?  It is imperative you express what is in it for them, as well as reporters, influencers, etc.  Because of the internet, the number of places to pitch has increased exponentially as well as it is easier than it was in the past.  The downside is larger numbers of people are utilizing PR, so you must look for ways to stand out from the noise. Reporters end up deleting 60-90% of the pitches they receive because of usability.  To be successful in pitching to reporters you must know how to position your story accordingly.  Below are simple things that you can do to increase the likelihood of success in pitching reporters.  You must know what your brand message is. You must identify what media outlets you want to pitch first. You must determine what topics are right for that audience. You must know the angle you want to use on the story You must focus on getting the right information out of reporters to pitch them properly You must email reporters a brief pitch on your idea  One of the most important things you can do is create a personalized pitch to a reporter.  Because most people will send out a generic pitch to multiple reporters in hopes of getting featured, utilizing a personalized pitch will help you to stand out. Additionally, you only want to pitch outlets and reporters who would be interested in your story.  Because they are busy working, sending your pitch to the wrong reporter means it will most likely be deleted. The One Thing Melanie recommends every business do is focus on Media Exposure.  A simple tool that anyone can use is HARO (Help A Reporter Out).  Each day multiple emails are sent to subscribers with reporters looking for experts to quote or interview for a story they are working on.
