Here’s my chat with Sean Karemaker. The podcast is available on Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts.  Sean is an artist living in Vancouver, BC. After a childhood obsession with reading and writing comics, he obtained a diploma in graphic design from Malaspina University-College in Nanaimo (2002) and began a career in 3D design for video games, with freelance work in graphic design and illustration. His book Feast Of Fields won the Alcuin Society prize for best graphic novel 2018.   During our chat, Sean spoke about his current projects that focus on pushing the envelope of the visual medium. He also explained his mural in Vancouver that brings attention to the issue of poverty in that city. Sean also emphasized the increased use and acceptance of new creative technologies among artists. Hollywood Soapbox interviewed Julian Peters (who appeared on a recent podcast) about his newest book Poems To See By.  When asked about his favourite poem, Julian said: “It may well be ‘The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock’ by T. S. Eliot, one of the very first poems I illustrated. It’s such a perfect blending of the most startling imagery with a beautiful, sad musicality. Sean Karemaker pushes the boundaries of visual artistry

He illustrates in a highly detailed textured style, and his stories flow in a dreamlike manner, free from the constrictions of sequential paneling. In fact, he creates many of his comics in a scroll-like manner, writing out his narratives across a broad horizontal field, and then later deciding how to break up his illustrations across pages. The result, as we find in his latest book Feast of Fields (Conundrum Press), is story whose unveiling reflects the process of memory, a sort of streaming of experience with a zig-zagging quality between past and present.  In this interview with Sean, Derek talks with his guest about this style of cartooning and especially the genesis of his latest book. It’s largely the story of his mother during her time in a Danish orphanage, but Sean contextualizes her narrative by placing it within his own life experiences and revealing what his mother’s past has meant to him. Derek also talks with Sean about his previous book from Conundrum, The Ghosts We Know, a collection of short pieces that are largely autobiographical in nature and provide a wonderful introduction to Karemaker’s style of comics storytelling.
