Valerie Naranjo is a music healer and performing musician who teaches at NYU Steinhart and performed for Saturday Night Live Houseband for 27 years.  She’s also a member of the Southern Ute Nation in Colorado and a world traveler who made 25 journeys to West Africa to learn to play their traditional music.  In our interview, Valerie talks about her experiences with the traditional music from her Ute background and with West African music and explores the parallels found in these and other indigenous traditions.  In addition to performing healing songs, she also discusses the connection between emotions and health, and how to use breath and music to heal and improve the quality of our lives.

 Joining us this week is Valerie Naranjo, gyil virtuoso, composer, percussionist for SNL and college instructor.  In addition to being taught by some of percussion's biggest names, she is also responsible for liberating women as gyil players in Ghana: they were previously not allowed to play the instrument.
