Mostly it’s catching up which I love because there’s always remarkable events, people and resources coming into their lives, and they’re always doing something special to help others.  More often than not, there’s insight and nuggets of wisdom that gets shared, and that was the case when Tim and I had a chat recently. Tim was a guest a while back.  He is hell-bent on serving disabled veterans.  You might remember his story about meeting with then candidate Donald Trump when he was fundraising for veterans in Iowa.  Now let’s put politics aside --- whatever you may feel about President Trump, Tim himself didn’t care where the money came from to help veterans, so long as it went to them.  Anyway, I’ll put a link to the show in the notes in case you’re interested.  http://givingbackpodcast.com/256-fulfilling-the-needs-of-our-disabled-veterans-tim-combs-with-americans-for-independent-living/ Back to Tim: he’s a carpenter and contractor with over 30 years experience.  Just a few years ago, the problems of disabled veterans captured his heart and he started pouring his time, talent and treasure into helping them out.  That’s how AFIL got started. He puts in ramps, rehabs houses, renovates them for accessibility. He’s been reaching out to Veterans groups, the VA, individuals, companies and groups in his area to talk about the problem and AFIL’s work. Like most of our guests, Tim is always looking for new ways to serve.  I spoke to him coming back from a trip to Florida, newly trained on installing, operating and maintaining lift equipment.  This is for a major manufacturer in the US and the lifts are for homes and cars, giving the veterans he serves a new set of accessibility solutions.   It’s also a new opportunity for Tim, a chance to serve the accessibility needs of Iowans.  With his certification and training in universal access design, construction, and the role of dealer-installer of this equipment, he is specialist in a big niche.  With the resources and support of the manufacturer, THIS could become his principal business with contracting a means for fulfilling his purpose. Wow, what a fantastic development, and it couldn’t happen to a better person. Putting others first created this opportunity for Tim.  He traveled to Florida to develop what he saw as a need for his AFIL clients, not for business.  And he moved fast. When I asked if he could’ve imagined this happening a year ago, he said it never even crossed his mind until a few months ago.   We are both constantly amazed by the cycle of abundance we find ourselves in.  The people, the places, the events, the work. Tim Combs is the Executive Director and Founder of Americans for Independent Living (AFIL).  Although not a veteran himself, Tim is dedicated to providing comfortable housing for our disabled veterans and for those who are at risk of being homeless. Most of us will never know what it's like to see combat. That's because a small population of Americans steps forward to serve, allowing the rest of us to remain securely behind the front lines. The debt we owe to our military is enormous, but all too often, the men and women who have so selflessly served come home and get lost in their transition back to civilian life. As awareness of the struggles faced by our veterans rises, it is up to us to decide what we are going to do to help those who have done so much for us. Thanks to people like Tim Combs, this country is beginning to address the needs of our returning service members. Tim Combs' non-profit, Americans For Independent Living, is providing homes and resources to veterans, and supporting them as they make that transition- some of them decades after they served.
