In this episode author David Constantine and his brother, historian Stephen Constantine, reflect on their experience and the legacy of Enoch Powell’s infamous Rivers of Blood speech, as well as post World War II immigration, Windrush, Brexit and Trump… David Constantine is an award-winning poet, translator, short story writer and novelist. His short story collections include Under the Dam (2005), The Shieling (2009) and Tea at the Midland (2012), which won the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, and the title story of which won the BBC National Short Story Award 2010. His second novel The Life-Writer (2014) was one of the New York Times' Top 100 Books of 2016 and in the same year a feature film based on 'In Another Country', titled 45 Years, received an Oscar nomination for star Charlotte Rampling.Stephen Constantine was appointed as a lecturer at Lancaster University in 1971 and retired in 2010 as Professor of Modern British History, while retaining an active research interest in empire and migration.Published in 2017, Protest: Stories of Resistance assembled twenty authors to re-imagine key moments of British protest from the last eight centuries. David Constantine reads ‘When I Left You, Afterwards…’ from his Popescu Prize shortlisted translation of Bertolt Brecht’s collection Love Poems, published by Liveright.  The Popescu European Poetry Translation Prize has been awarded biennially by The Poetry Society for a volume of poetry translated from a European language into English. The judges this year are Olivia McCannon and Clare Pollard. The prize is supported in 2015 by the British Council. His translation of Goethe’s Faust, Parts I and II, came out in Penguin in 2005 and 2009. He has published several volumes of poetry, most recently Nine Fathom Deep (Bloodaxe, 2009); also a novel and three volumes of short stories, the most recent of these being The Shieling (Comma Press, 2009).  He was the 2010 winner of the BBC National Short Story Award for 'Tea at the Midland'.

John Berger came to the Bookshop to celebrate the life and work of Aimé Césaire on the occasion of Archipelago's reissue of Césaire's long poem Cahier d'un retour au pays natal (1936). Born in Martinique in 1913, Césaire was one of the founding voices of the négritude movement in Francophone literature. He considered this work his “break into the forbidden,” at once a cry of rebellion and a celebration of black identity. The English translation by John Berger and Anya Bostock retains the visceral, lyric energy of the French original. John Berger opened the evening with a reading from Return to My Native Land, and was then joined in conversation by the poet and translator David Constantine. The pair discussed Césaire's work, exploring what it means to write in one's mother tongue and the nature of hope. Berger concluded the evening with a reading of Peter Blackman's 'Stalingrad'.
