ADC Samer Khalaf on discrimination &amp;the  US Census: Shadin Maali on Marie Newman and Arab candidates June 29, 2022, Season 2 Episode 13 Hosted by the US Arab Radio Network and sponsored by Arab News Topics: Discrimination against Arabs, US Census and the election loss of Congresswoman Marie Newman In Segment 1: Samer Khalaf, national president of the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee ADC since 2013 Mr. Khalaf served as the Interim ADC Legal Director in 1997, and was an intern with the organization in 1996. Mr. Khalaf becomes the first ADC Intern to return to the organization as President – a testament to the organizations commitment to the development of young and future leaders. Mr. Khalaf recently served as a member of the National Board of the ADC. The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) is a national grassroots, civil rights organization that welcomes people of all backgrounds, faiths and ethnicities as members. ADC is non-sectarian and non-partisan and is the largest Arab-American grassroots organization in the United States. Segment 2: Shadin Maali, chief of district affairs for Congresswoman Marie Newman, who was elected in 2020 to represent the 3rd Congressional District. A Democrat, Newman was very supportive of Palestinian and Muslim rights and was targeted by the pro-Israel Democrats who forced her into a fight during redistricting with Democratic Congressman Sean Casten. On Tuesday, Casten defeated Newman. Casten received 13,605 votes or 54 percent and Newman received 10,661 votes or 42.3 percent of the vote. A third candidate, Charles Hughes received 957 votes or 3.8 percent of the vote. In 1980, James Abourezk, US Senator from South Dakota and the first Arab-American elected to Congress, founded the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee. It is now the nation’s largest grassroots nonprofit advocating for the civil and human rights of Arab Americans. With a small staff of lawyers, and community-based supporters in 50 states, ADC, under the leadership of Samer Khalef, represents Arab Americans in cases involving hate crimes, discrimination and deportation. And it educates the public and policy makers about who Arab Americans are, from their rich cultural backgrounds to their experience in America. Arab-Americans face specific challenges as immigrants, including the reality of being stateless and having no country to claim as their own. Those who are able to remain in the US exist in a sort of legal limbo. They are on essentially on parole, unable to work and ineligible for public resources. Samer is optimistic about the determination of Arab Americans to turn out for the 2020 elections but concerned about voter suppression. He will definitely make the voice of his community heard.
