Two weeks ago, an infection at Spring Farm on the South Fork resulted in a 6,000-bird loss that might have resulted in Dave Schellinger’s retirement, according to Christine Sampson’s reporting for the East Hampton Star. The outbreak has resulted in birds from all over Long Island, including penguins at the Long Island Aquarium, being kept under increased surveillance to avoid cross-contamination, not to mention any interaction with wild birds that might be infected.
