This week we are joined by Elsie Coleman – Parliamentarian and Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Economic Development. We discuss some of the portfolio committee’s roles relating to unblocking impediments to job creation in South Africa, such as the provision of adequate social infrastructure like water and sanitation services that have a significant impact on households, particularly for women. We debate women’s empowerment in the workplace stressing that whilst legislation may encourage women to participate in the workforce they still need the requisite skills to perform the functions expected of them, and skills support is not always readily available.
