"Take, for example, somebody in a heavy manual labour type job where the risks are very high every day simply because they're moving, they're around heavy objects, and they have to use their physical capabilities to do their job, as opposed to somebody like me who sits at a desk every day and I operate a mouse and I type. And so, the risks in each respective role are completely different. How to lift safely in the workplace, I've had heaps of training on all of this stuff but it's not enough to just train either just like what you said, Ainslie. You then have to be making sure that people are complying with the things that you've taught them. You have to make sure that your managers and that you're leader is monitoring staff and if they're noticing that certain procedures, ways of doing things, are not being safely adhered to that the person is being pulled up. And it's not a written warning type of situation as far as I'm concerned. It's seek first to understand: did you actually understand that this is what this policy is that you've signed?Because if not let's sit down and have a conversation about it. This is why it's dangerous. These are the types of claims that we are aware of that people bring in, workers' compensation claims or public liability claims, and this is the outcome. If you are injured, or if you hurt somebody else, or if you make the wrong decision, this is your liability as well as the company's. Leadership, culture, WH&S & workers' compensation claims with Lana Woltman

Lana is a Personal Injuries Lawyer and a Senior Associate at Ramsden Lawyers on the sunny Gold Coast. Lana ended up studying Law after she was involved in an unfortunate motor vehicle accident. The encouragement Lana received from her Lawyer at the time was the final push she needed to have the confidence to commence studying Law and Lana hasn’t looked back. Lana shares plenty of helpful tips for law students – from getting your foot in the door for your first law job to creating relationships with Lawyers through networking and finding a mentor. Lana Woltman: Step outside of your comfort zone and create your own opportunities

In this week’s episode of the ‘Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast’ I had the pleasure of interviewing Lana Woltman a former (almost) pop star now lawyer from the beautiful Gold Coast.  Lana is  bundle of joy and fun and I promise will have you smiling along with her during this chat.  Having grown up on the Gold Coast, Lana found herself pursuing her passion for music and the stage both at school and later at University.  She did tell me that if she wasn’t a lawyer she would be a Rock Star and I sense she really is in her own way!  Having finished her music degree and pursing that career for a few years a chance motor vehicle accident had Lana dealing with solicitors for the first time in her life.  Another chance comment led to her following her intuition and pausing that music career for a law career and she hasn’t looked back. Lana is a personal injuries lawyer now working at Slater and Gordon Lawyers on the Gold Coast.  She thoroughly enjoys the practice of law, helping her client overcome often significant tragedy.  Lana shared so many great insights in this chat all around the theme of happiness- from building resilience, being tenacious, celebrating success and importantly, being kind to yourself along the way too.  I loved this chat and I am sure you will too.
