9-10JUN1944: After landing on Omaha beach a few days prior, SSG Walter Ehlers was leading his squad as they cleared out German resistance inland.  Identifying several enemy strongpoints, SSG Ehlers moved out ahead to lead the attack on the positions.  As he was maneuvering his squad into position, he came across a patrol of four German soldiers which he wiped out on his own.  Crawling beneath heavy machine gun fire, SSG Ehlers time and again led daring assaults into enemy positions where he was outnumbered.  First he overran a machine gun nest, killing all four inside.  He then made his way to a mortar pit and killed or made flee those manning the weapon system.  Finally, he turned back to a second machine gun nest and, covered by his squad, crept up on and killed the entire crew himself.  The following day his platoon was ordered to move back and tie into friendly lines.  Given the volume of enemy fire, SSG Ehlers volunteered to cover the withdrawal.  Standing up to attract enemy fire, SSG Ehlers traded fire with German machine gunners allowing his platoon to exit the area.  Despite being wounded himself, SSG Ehlers picked up a wounded comrade and carried him to safety amidst the hail of gunfire surrounding him.    After having his wound treated, SSG Ehlers refused to be evacuated and continued to lead his squad throughout the Normandy campaign.

Walter Ehlers is a World War II Veteran who participated in the invasion or North Africa.  He would go on to earn the nation's highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor, for actions during the Allied invasion of Normandy in June of 1944.
