TERRA: Memory &amp; Soil is a collaboration between Victoria Pham and Joel Spring that transforms West Space gallery into an immersive garden by  combining sound, biological-sculpture, architecture and projection. The project interrogates how we remember our past landscapes, bringing vastly different insights into notions of the built environment, history and legacies of colonialism.Archeologist and composer Victoria Pham talks through the elements that make up TERRA; the practice of archeo-acoustics; and the mission of placing indigenous knowledge at the centre of knowledge production, cultural exchange and story-telling. Victoria Pham is an Australian installation artist, composer, archaeologist and evolutionary biologist. She is a current PhD candidate for Biological Anthropology at the University of Cambridge where she seeks to expand her interdisciplinary work into a broader exploration of acoustic perception as a basis into modes of bio-acoustic material development and construction. Sara and Darren are back, chatting through a recent film and how it brought up feelings around having your lived experience as a marginalised person "extracted" and coopted from you. We then hear an interview by Shareeka Helaluddin with artists Victoria Pham and James Nguyen. Ahead of a series of workshops they'll be facilitating at the Sydney Opera House, they chatted about the work they’ve been doing to recover a Vietnamese drum called the Đông Sơn. Hear about how this led to their collaboration exploring ancestral instruments and “breaking the glass cabinet” of museums that take away cultural objects from colonised peoples to enact a deeper and politicised sense of listening.  RE:TUNING is part of this year’s Antidote festival at the Sydney Opera House on Sunday 11 September. Episode 119: Retuning, The Politics of Listening (with Victoria Pham & James Nguyen)

In this week’s episode, Geoff is talking to Victoria Pham who was a Finalist in the 2019 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards for NSW/ACT. Victoria was nominated in the Academic Achievement Award and is now undertaking a PhD at the University of Cambridge in Biological anthropology, specifically studying the evolution of signalling and communication in the hopes we can have a better understanding of our connection to nature, and how to build alongside nature in a way that is more sustainable. Aside from this, I am continuing with my arts and music practice which has led to exhibitions, commissions and premieres of my work across Australia, USA, UK and Europe, as well as hosting and producing my own podcast DECLASSIFY. I was a semi-finalist in the arts and culture category in 2018 and a finalist in the academic/science achievement category in 2019, and so my interdisciplinary career reflects both those nominations.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
