Weekly Scrap #105 - Craig Stalowy, The Backstep

Craig Stalowy started his fire service career in the Chicago area in 2004 before eventually moving to Colorado in 2009. He worked for the City of Colorado Springs for 6 years and is currently a Firefighter/Paramedic on a truck company for East Metro Fire Rescue (CO).Joining John Spera and Tom Johnson, Craig became a member of the Fit to Fight Fire team in 2019. He is the primary author of Fit to Fight Fire’s newest book: The Backstep. He has completed the Ironman race and multiple ultramarathons. He is also a lead instructor with Elevated Safety, a company that provides world-class training on confined space and rope rescue. Lastly, Craig was awarded the Medal of Valor for his efforts as the SWAT Medic at the 2015 Planned Parenthood Shooting in Colorado Springs.Learn more at FitToFightFire.com.

Episode 036 – You were first introduced to Craig Stalowy on Episode 032 (the “Planned Parenthood” episode), but this time we discuss investing in the fire service, what responsibilities the senior man really has when it comes to teaching and mentoring, and the positive effects that an energetic training environment has on a fire company’s station life and morale. We also talk about how we instinctively ‘buy in’ to the messenger more than the message itself, as it’s about the actions from leaders – not their words. Craig Stalowy is a Fire Medic with East Metro Fire Rescue, and spent prior time as a career firefighter in suburban Chicago (IL) and Colorado Springs (CO). He instructs regularly with Fit To Fight Fire at regional and national conferences, is a Rope Technician with Elevated Safety, and is the founder of Mile High Fire Training.
