I first spoke with Clee Roy on Bikepack Canada Podcast #51, when we connected with Kurt Refsnider of bikepackingroots.org to discuss The Wild West Route. As one of the scouts, Clee was one of the riders to help develop this alternate route to the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route.What stood out to me most about Clee, was his ability to paint a picture of his experiences through his outstanding story telling ability. Clee spends a lot of time on his bike, racking up tens of thousands of kilometres every year. With that amount of trail time, you can imagine he has many stories to tell.In this conversation, we mix Clee’s stories with brief intermissions to discuss gear choices like water filtration, bike and tire recommendations and also cover topics like the growth and monetization of the sport of Bikepacking, the uptick in pro level rider participation in bikepacking and gravel events and what this means for the sport, as well as other interesting tangents.Clee, has now made Nelson, BC his home, for now, and plans to take advantage of all the amazing activities this small Kootenay town has to offer.This is another long one, so pop in your buds and head out on the trail. Today, May 13th, is the official release of the Wild West Route. Here’s an excerpt from bikepackingroots.org: “The 2,700-mile Wild West Route is designed to offer bikepackers a non-technical, expeditionary-scale riding experience that immerses one in the vast expanses of wild and public lands in the Intermountain West. Nearly 70% of the route is on public lands – 18 National Forests, 6 National Parks and Monuments, and 4 areas with Bureau of Land Management National Conservation Lands designation. Riders will experience the incredibly remote mountains of western Montana and central Idaho, the desolate beauty of southern Idaho’s Snake River Plain, endless vistas from Utah’s high plateaus at 10,000 feet elevation, the canyon country of Navajo Nation and Grand Canyon region, and the towering Sky Islands and low Sonoran Desert of southern Arizona.”
