I’ve been waiting to have this conversation with Russell Dinkins for a while now and it did not disappoint. Over the past couple of years this man has helped saved the men’s track and field programs at Brown University, Clemson, the University of Minnesota, and William and Mary. He’s now the executive director of the Tracksmith Foundation, where he will continue that work while also helping create more opportunities and inspire broader participation in track and field through various forms of advocacy and assistance. Russell is also an incredible athlete: he competed at Princeton, where he was a 400- and 800-meter runner and a five-time Ivy League individual champion, and he’s still getting after it and competing on the track into his 30s.In this conversation we talked about the path he’s followed in the sport, track and field as a vehicle for diversity and educational access, how his relationship to running has evolved over the years, what he hopes to achieve through his work moving forward, and a lot more. This episode is brought to you by:— New Balance. "Track &amp; Field is important to me because of the opportunities...my youth program coach stressed using your sport as a means for accessing greater academic opportunity. Since 6 years old, I have carried that message with me." Russell Dinkins is an elite athlete and former Princeton University runner. After writing a  viral piece for Medium.com last June, Russell found himself leading the charge to save Men’s Track &amp; Field and Cross-Country at several colleges and universities across the United States, as we’ve seen several institutions cutting their programs over the past year. Schools have cited various reasons for this, including Coronavirus budget reductions and other institutional policies like Title IX, which is a federal law that protects against sex discrimination in college sports. Ultimately, Russell helped successfully reinstate the Men’s Track &amp; Field and Cross-Country programs at William &amp; Mary, Brown, and the University of Minnesota. We talk about diversity in Track &amp; Field, college pathways for low-income students, and the admissions and recruitment process. This is a complex conversation with many layers, but I appreciate Russell’s candidness here as he discusses his own experiences at Princeton and gives educators, parents, coaches, and current high school athletes some great advice along the way. Graduate of Princeton University, Russell is originally from the city of Philadelphia and has a PR of 1:46.40 in the 800 and 46.95 in the 400. Russell also received the coveted Spirit of Princeton Award and was pivotal in saving Brown track and field and bringing awareness to the racial disparities within collegiate athletics with his article, “Brown University, If You Were Actually Serious About Racial Justice You Would Not be Cutting the Men’s Track Team.” Russell is an incredible person with so many talents and we had an incredible conversation. "Here’s the thing: For a kid who plays squash in Connecticut, it doesn’t matter if they go to Brown, Princeton or Harvard. They can go to some other school and they’re likely going to be OK. Their families have money. They have connections. They’re going to be alright. They’re going to go to college. A kid who ran really fast and ran a really great 1,500 at their small state meet or their local city conference, gets a call from somebody – they have a life-changing opportunity. They have an opportunity to change their future in a way that otherwise would not have been possible. Why am I going to sit back and let that happen? I’m not so that’s why I wrote the article." On May 28, Brown University announced its decision to cut 11 varsity sports as part of their Excellence in Brown Athletics Initiative. The teams that were cut were men's and women’s fencing, men's and women’s golf, women’s skiing, men's and women’s squash, women’s equestrian, and men’s track, field, and cross country — will transition to club status. Former Princeton middle distance specialist Russell Dinkins joins the CITIUS MAG Podcast after writing "Brown University, If You Were Actually Serious About Racial Justice You Would Not Be Cutting the Men’s Track Team." Nearly 50,000 people have signed a petition to retain the program's varsity status.
