Jochen Fahr, Founder of Fahr Brewery, had the vision to make the best beer in the world!  In only a few short years, Fahr’s hefeweizen was awarded the best in the world - so mission accomplished.  I don’t think he’s quite done yet though - he has some big plans to expand the brewery and their distribution.  So what is Terra’s role at Fahr?  She is the glue that keeps the machine together!  One of Jochen’s greatest skills has been to stay focused on this vision while building a team that is able to contribute in really meaningful ways.  It was great to have both Jochen and Terra on the podcast to get a well-rounded vision of where Fahr is heading - I hope that you enjoy the conversation!Alberta Beer Festivals: website | instagramFahr Brewery: website | instagram

Episode #55 - Fahr Brewery Jochen Fahr (Founder) & Terra Harvey (Executive Assistant)

This week’s guest, Jochen Fahr of Braureri Fahr, joins us this week to discuss his trans-continental history and his award winning beer.Jochen was “brewed and raised” in Germany, coming from a tiny town of just 300 people in the foothills of the Alps. Growing up (or brewing up?) Jochen had wanted to be chef, but in a radical departure he ended up going to university for bio chemical engineering. Through his schooling he spent a year long exchange at the University of Calgary doing neuroscience work, a decision he made based on the cheap cost of a flight to Calgary!Following his exchange at the U of C Jochen returned to Germany to complete his thesis before making his way back to Calgary once more in 2008 to start his Master’s in medical science followed by a PhD in bio medical engineering. However, Jochen claims that “PhD” stands for “permanent head damage”, a symptom of banging your head against the wall, which is something that only beer can cure.In a marriage between his love passion for cooking and his scientific background, Jochen incorporated Braureri Fahr in 2015 after quitting his job and figuring he could be a much better boss than the folks he had been working for. After 10 months of raising funds he started brewing his beer out of Toolshed, and by October 2017 he was brewing out of his own space in Turner Valley.Since the beginning consistency has been hugely important to him. Consistency in the quality of the beer (which nearly all follows the 1516 Purity Law) which has led to his many awards, and consistency in how he treats his employees and contributes to his community. Jochen is a huge advocate for being a good corporate citizen, with the brewery currently sponsoring a men’s and women’s curling team. This episode I sat down to hear the cool story behind Fahr Beer!Founded in Turner Valley, Alberta by Jochen Fahr - Fahr Beer was built on the idea of being as different as possible from most traditional breweries. For example, Jochen deliberately chose to build the brewery outside the city of Calgary, while following the strict German Purity laws when brewing his beer. Making the story even more interesting is that Jochen has made it his goal to build as many sustainable practices into the business as he could. Using filtered water to help grow grass for reclamation projects, giving old grain husks to local cows and and using recycled Nitrogen are just a few of the cool projects done so far!We sat down for a smooth cup of rose bros coffee   and talked about Jochen's path from getting a PhD in Biomedical Engineering to starting a brewery, sustainable brewing practices, being different, treating employees right and removing gimmicks from your business!Enjoy!Support the show
