Tommy Hyde’s beguiling feature documentary debut UNDERDOG follows a hardscrabble Vermont dairy farmer Doug Butler. Doug has an offbeat passion – dog mushing. A local folk hero, Doug trains his team of mutts on the family farm with a dream to compete at the world championships in Alaska. But the demands of being a small-scale family farmer in a changing world are constant. Keenly aware of the fate of the other family farms that used to dot the landscape, Doug has managed for years to play one creditor off against the next to survive another season. But with the debt now insurmountable and Doug’s thoughts plunging into depression, his dogs offer solace...and perhaps a way out. On a cold March morning Doug pulls out of his driveway in a rusted-out truck carrying 22 dogs, bound for Alaska. The journey will prepare him for what he’ll confront when he gets back: the sale of his farm and a race to craft a new destiny. Director, cinematographer, editor Tommy Hyde joins us for a conversation on how met his charismatic subject, being welcomed into Doug’s energetic world, traveling across country with Doug and working how working with UNDERDOG producer and writer, Aaron Woolf and producer Kyra Schaefer from Mosaic Films Productions made this possible. Capturing the Ultimate Underdog Story with Aaron Woolf and Tommy Hyde!

Tommy Hyde is a 2-0 professional boxer and publican from Cork. As a kid he travelled the world with his fighter-managing father, Gary, posing for pics with boxing royalty such as Oscar De La Hoya, Gennady Golovkin, Amir Khan, Nonito Donaire, George Groves, Ricky Hatton, Andre Ward, Sergiy Kovalev, Freddie Roach, Shane Mosley, Antonio Margarito and Ken Buchanan, to name just a few. He’s there with heavyweight champs Olexsandr Usyk, Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis, and lined up for pics and entertainment icons like 50 Cent, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kendrick Lamar and Tom Jones. Along the way he was picking up tips – because Tommy could box, too. He was a three-time Irish underage champ and twice an Elite runner-up, also winning the Celtic Box Cup three times and fighting in Russia, South Africa, Portugal, USA, Ukraine, Canada, Netherlands, Germany, England. After following his dream to become a pro, his debut was planned for his hometown in April 2022… until disaster struck on fight week. Findings in his MRI scan meant that not only was his fight off, but his career was over too. “It was devastating news”, said Gary, but he was determined to seek a second opinion. Tommy kept training away in the background, minus contact, and endured six months of waiting until it was confirmed that he could embark upon his journey. It’s only the start, but it’s already been The Rocky Road to this point. Tommy fights again in Dorchester on St Patrick’s Day before a return to Ireland for an April date in Waterford.
