More recently, he co-directed the short film Drowning by Sunrise for The Intercept, and produced T, the 2020 winner of the Golden Bear for Best Short Film at Berlinale. Prior to this, Jeffers was a journalist with The Miami Herald, and his writing has also appeared in outlets such as American Way and Ocean Drive.In addition to his film work, Jeffers is also the Founding Director of the Miami-based Caribbean filmmaking collective Third Horizon, which stages the annual Third Horizon Film Festival, a showcase of cinema from the Caribbean, its diaspora, and other underrepresented spaces in the Global South. It was named one of the “25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World” in 2019 and 2021 by MovieMaker Magazine. For this and other work at the intersection of filmmaking and social justice, Jeffers was named a 2019 Ford Foundation / Rockwood Leadership Institute JustFilms fellow.Jeffers is currently in development on two feature-length projects: he is co-writing and producing Untitled Opa-locka Project, a science fiction set in inner-city Miami, which has been supported by Sundance Talent Forum, SFFILM and Cinereach; and he is also directing The First Plantation, a documentary on the fight for reparations in Barbados for which he was named a Doc Society New Perspectives fellow.ABOUT BRANDON HARRISOriginally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Brandon Harris has worked in the world of American Cinema as a studio executive and film director, critic and programmer, screenwriter and educator. Jason Fitzroy Jeffers is a true Caribbean renaissance man. A filmmaker, journalist and music maker, his creative endeavors explore social issues as well as uplift Caribbean history and culture. We had a great time chatting with him about his impromptu journey learning Haitian machete fencing, the importance of Caribbean storytelling, and of course, slow jams and human connection in the time of a pandemic. Jason’s journalism work has appeared in The Intercept, The Miami Herald and American Way Magazine. As a ghostwriter, he’s crafted text for two New York Times bestselling authors. As a filmmaker, he has produced award-winning short films such as “Papa Machete” which world premiered at Toronto International Film Festival 2014 and had its U.S. premiere at Sundance Film Festival 2015, and “T”, which won the Golden Bear at Berlinale 2020.As an arts administrator, Jason wears two hats: as Co-Executive Director of Third Horizon, a Caribbean filmmaking collective that produces the annual Third Horizon Film Festival; and as Cinematic Arts Senior Manager at Oolite Arts, one of Miami’s largest artist support organizations. Jason also launched a podcast series called Foggy Windows this past month. Jason Fitzroy Jeffers has made a few leaps of faith in his life, including quitting his job at an established newspaper without knowing what would come next; taking time to develop his music career and, inspired by a Reddit thread on tire machèt he found in the midst of a depression, making a short film without prior experience.As Jason shares these "leaps," a few threads emerge in our conversation: trusting yourself and what you love, even if the outcome may be unclear; fueling conversations about what the Caribbean is and how it is depicted in popular consciousness; challenging (resisting, even) what is presented on different digital media platforms in today's social and political climate; and questioning why people have trouble being vulnerable and intimate with one another.Jason is a writer, filmmaker, journalist and musician who hails from Barbados.
