The second episode presents a reading by artist Matt Mullican, who is working between New York and Berlin. Born in California in 1951 where he studied at CalArts in the Post Studio Art Class by John Baldessari, Mullican’s work is often associated with the New York Pictures Generation, testing out the boundaries between reality and fiction in regards to images, signs and symbols that surround us in our everyday lives. Matt Mullican – The Five Worlds

Der 1951 in Kalifornien geborene Mullican, der heute in Berlin lebt und an der Kunsthochschule in Hamburg unterrichtet, begann sich in den 1970er Jahren mit der Frage zu beschäftigen, was Bilder bedeuten und was sie beschreiben. “Nothing Should Exist”: Wie können wir uns vergewissern, dass etwas tatsächlich existiert? Wie können wir uns aus Bildern und Eindrücken eine zusammenhängende Welt konstruieren?In Matt Mullicans Werk geht es um nichts Geringeres als um die Aneignung der Wirklichkeit, um die Beziehung zwischen den Dingen und ihrer symbolischen Darstellung, zwischen unmittelbarer Erfahrung und systematischer Ordnung, zwischen subjektiver Deutung und materieller Welt. Was für eine Welt repräsentiert ein Bild, fragte sich Mullican. Was heisst es, wenn man auf die Darstellungskraft einer Comic-Zeichnung vertraut, sie wörtlich versteht und daraus eine mögliche Wirklichkeit konstruiert? Wiekann man begreifen, was darin geschieht, wie sieht die darin dargestellte Welt wirklich aus? In Zeichnungen begann Mullican eine fiktive Welt zu entwickeln und sie auf ihre Realitätshaltigkeit zu überprüfen.
